I believe so, though my understanding is increasing the width of the tire but not the wheel lets the sidewall flex more, which means reduced steering response (and, I'm assuming, steering feel). How much it's reduced, and whether the advantages in other areas are worth it, I can not say.
At the very least a wider tyre will just looked nice...

However one shop told me they couldn't install 305s due to the rim range being 10.5-11.5. Currently I have a rim range of 10-11. :

That is true but I run 305s on my stock wheels as do many other people without issues. I purchased 5mm spacers and bolts from ebay, cost £35.
