F10 - winter traction

How is everyone getting on with their M5's in the damp dreary weather?

I have had mine for 7 months now, I give it a good trashing on the motor ways or dual carriage ways once its up to speed, 40 mph rolling and then nailing the right foot.

Around town it seems pointless as its not going to go far...I have the Michelin Pilot Sports on the vehicle not the 4s but just the sports. They are 75% new and struggle to get grip.

My mind often wonders what this car would be like if it had the x drive system like the F90 M5, i have not been in one but I can see myself changing when they hit the 30 to 35k mark, probably not for a few years yet.

The Michelin PS4s do make a huge difference to the previous tyres but you can only floor it in the dry at this time of the year, they inspire a lot more confidence than the previous Pirrelli P Zeros also.

4WD would be nice but I am bored of a big car so would not get the F90.

Next stop for me is retirement in Spain hopefully in 2 years when I am 53

what you need is an F80 M3 mate! I hear 2018 is the best year to get...

Its funny you say that, my previous car history was e36 325i, then a e46 330i and then a e92 335i then this F10 M5.

Its massive, like a barge compared to my other cars. I think the new 340i X DRIVE 0-60 4.2 secs is the one, half the running costs and a better size. But they are retailing at 45 +.

I recon the f90 M5 is a monster going by the reviews as well. The F10 is nice but it scares me as I am not going to pretend I can drift cars like you see in Top Gear

i'm running the winter tyre package with Pirelli sottozero tyres slightly more grip than the summer Super Sports but nothing amazing, still spins like a mad thing.

Waste of time in winter / damp roads.
I have Run Supersport and Mps4 great I’m dry but damp no, Ford Ranger for this time of year

Get some decent tyres and use MDM mode when its dry and gradually get your confidence. I was very cautious when I got mine with Pirrelli's on, the car was just dangerous.

A lot better now and with 708bhp its well behaved, as you know you have to respect anything with over 500bhp and rear wheel drive.

As soon as I sense a side ways skip I ease off the throttle

Hey question for those who know about the values of these cars; what would you mark this up for on Auto Trader in the Spring Time not now as its Winter and rear wheel drives are out of favor, I am talking about a month or two, perhaps April:

I had an awful traction moment the other night.

All settings in comfort, fairly new MPS on the rear, 7 Deg, dry roads (May have been greasy, couldn’t see anything)

I went to overtake a 35mph dawdler (looked pissed) on a National limit backroad and the rear broke out horrendously during a fairly gentle step out. The M5 really wallops you when the back end goes and catches.

I’ve had this before, last time it was a deep undulation in the road and it’s a credit to the M5s safety systems that it recovers stuff that would have a TVR ploughing the field.

Even so I’m starting to lose my confidence in the car in anything but warm dry daylight.

It felt a bit odd to me, does this sound like a suspension or tyre issue? My RDC is malfunctioning, tyre pressures are fine and unchanging at 34psi, I’ll sort the RDC under warranty when I get some time.

Can I ask why some of you use MDM in the wet? Is it to avoid the juddering?

I had the impression there would be a risk of going all over the place if you got throttle slightly wrong.

I just swapped my F10 M5 for an M340i

I had the M5 on Michelin super sports in the summer and Continental wintercontact in the winter.

Traction was OK provided you used some mechanical sympathy, but I always found it difficult to judge when the rear tyres would break loose. Manageable, but sometimes twitchy.

I’d had been keeping an eye out for an m3 or m5 competition. But in the end I decided that the M3 was to harsh compared to the F10 and the F90 was so competent that it would actually be a bit dull to own.

So I went for an M340i on the basis that it was smaller and lighter, about as fast up to 100mph and a lot cheaper.

Although I initially missed that ‘special’ thing of owning a proper M car, I think the M340i is easier to live with day to day. It is way more refined than the F10 in comfort mode and you can drive it in a ‘spirited’ way without immediately running out of road.

I can imagine the M340 is a great car and probably all you need 99% of the time but for me its just not special, the M5 makes me feel excited before I get in it, the sound, the potential is more than I would get from a mainstream M lite.

It's another one that's not quite a full M car with the half badging.I'd personally wait for the proper M3 to emerge and make a comparison then.
