What Oil do you use

Morning all,

Quick question, wanted to check what make of oil and which grade you are using.

Seems to me that it's between 5w30 & 0W30.

I use Castrol Edge 0w30 LL04 as recommended by BMW with all the correct specs. The 5w30 is not recommended as is the Mobil 1 0w40 which had it's recommendation taken away.
The Castrol is boosted with titanium FST which in tests holds 15% more protection than the previous one and is especially made for engines with tight tolerances i.e. the rod bearings on the M5 and it's fully synthetic.

That oil is based on 'synthetic technology' not fully synthetic.I would only use fully synthetic in these.

Happy to use what BMW advise

It's under warranty so if anything goes wrong it's their issue

I am not sure the outcome if I took my own oil to BMW and said use that and then the engine went

Appreciate your view but as mentioned in warranty

As long as it's BMW recommendation then your covered, there is no doubt with that .Believe me and ESPECIALLY with your tune.
Remember what dealer was saying when M5 first came out that 10w60 was fine

From the manual

When selecting an engine oil, ensure that
the engine oil belongs to the viscosity grade
SAE 0W-30 or SAE 0W-40 or malfunctions or
engine damage may occur.
Alternatively, also engine oils with viscosity
grades SAE 5W-30 or SAE 5W-40 may be
used.◀
The engine oil quality is critical for the life of the
engine.

I would go for 0w30 but there is very little between 5w30 and 0w30 if both are fully synthetic , i wouldnt brake my neck over getting a 0w30 if a 5w30 is easily available.
