What to look out for?
Hi,
I have decided I want another M5, I am looking at a 2012 with 60k on the clock and would love to know what to look out for when I view the car. I had an E39 M5 and miss it every day, had loads of others too, 335i, 535i E39, 745I, 840CI and a couple more, been driving a 2009 Merc CL500 AMG for the last two and a half years but want the M back. Any help much appreciated. thanks |

Service history is the most imp one to look out for. Always good to take it to your mechanic and have them life it up and check suspension, steering, belts hoses oil leaks etc. good luck.

The same as to what I have mentioned before applies to models above '12 as the engines are exactly the same for even the often mentioned 'lci' models that have exactly the same non forged rod bearings as the 11-13 ones.Makes no difference as they need to be checked also for peace of mind.

Hi,
Thanks for all your reply's, much appreciated. I take it there's an issue with rod bearing in this engine? I am aware of the oil consumption on certain engines and i'm guessing its just your luck , however I have had a service history report and it has had 8 services all by BMW, also to note on the bulletin was that it had been into BMW for a few top ups around 3k miles apart in its earlier days. I take it this is a lifetime issue? also the turbo lines have been repaired around 10k miles ago. car has new brakes all round and tyres so no issues there. i'm not overly concerned with basic repairs as I usually do these myself and I also have a great mechanic if required. The engine would be the worry but i'm sure there are thousands around with no issues. the internet always shows up the problematic ones which gets you thinking.. Are the early models that bad I should steer clear? 66k is fairly low mileage I would have thought, my old E39 had 148k on her when I sold and was still pulling strong. thanks again guys!! |

You only hear rod issues when there is a problem. There are countless number of other things that could go wrong with your car and if you start thinking about it, you can't sleep at night. Buy one that suits your budget, do preventive maintenance and enjoy it. You don't hear about rod bearings as much compared to E60 E90 platform if it makes you feel any better

yeah, I think if you looked on the forums and read through all the posts you would never buy a car. I had a 996 911 and after two years found out about a potentially catastrophic engine issue, most people walked away but I never knew about it and my car was excellent. I usually just ask about the main issues and try to get a feel for what to look for when I view so thanks for all your input. the car has 4 previous owners which is a few I guess for a 7 year old car but most 2011-2013 models have this that are for sale at the moment in the u.k and also some newer ones. I usually change every two years and sometimes earlier so I guess there could be plenty of people like me out there. think I will take the 300 mile trip to have a look and if I like it have an inspection carried out.
thanks |

It doesn't really have any options. Not sure if that's important to you.
The only things I can see are comfort access and heads up display. I would definitely go for a car with Bang and Olufsen. I have every option on my car but the most important ones to me are heads up display, B&O, comfort access, and seat ventilation. I personally love having options, but some don't like to as they see it as just a more complex machine that has more things to go wrong, which isn't untrue. As for the mileage, most "common" issues are overblown, just like with any car. At the end of the day, a small percentage of owners are on the forums and other various groups. And even less people will purposely take time out of their day just to write a post saying "drove my car for 60k miles without any issues." My car is a 2013 with 61k miles, doesn't consume more than maybe half a liter of oil between oil changes, and has been dead reliable apart from a door lock actuator. Suit yourself, it's all about what you need or prefer. |

Hi,
Thanks again for all your replys, I have decided to pull the plug on that particular car, The dealer was difficult to deal with over the phone so i will move on. I'm just going to wait for exactly what i want, has to be Monte Carlo Blue with black leather and M seats. Defo 20" rims also. Not too bothered about options although they can be nice to have. Service history and the break in service will be my main priority. Cheers |

200% what he said. Pre LCI's will tank harder in value and hold their lesser value in re-sale. Weaker Fuel pumps and the older version of injectors are known to bomb the engines. 2015+ have better clutches. |

40k miles is not a lot for this model year. Have it inspected, drive it, stare at it. If you look back at it while walking away, then it's The One. But please take a close look at the condition of the brakes and tires. Tires will cost $350+ per corner mounted and balanced, and brakes could run you between $2k-$5k. And you'll want an aftermarket service contract (warranty) because M = money when it breaks. Good luck!

I will keep you updated. whilst searching I found this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2013-BMW-...cAAOSwW9VdGInL Found the rear badge amusing!!! |

Service history for sure, as others have mentioned. Try to buy a car from an individual rather than a dealer, as you have a better chance of getting service history. Also, try to find cars w/ as few owners as possible. Cars w/ multiple owners usually don't get the maintenance investment they need, for obvious reasons. Lastly, if you want to save yourself some money in the long run, look for a "turn-key" car, i.e. a car that doesn't need anything in the near future. Brakes, tires, interval maintenance, etc. Those things can easily add up to $2k (USD) each. I just replaced tires on my car after buying it in May to the tune of $1700. Oil change is up next, which I'll be doing myself.
Good luck and don't settle!

Hi,
I have put a holding deposit down on a late 2013 LCI with Comp package. I have not seen it yet and will go down in a few days. I have had a BMW report carried out and all checks out good, running in service etc all perfect. Tyres all at 6mm, and most importantly the brakes were fully replaced around 12k miles ago. Has also had a gearbox service and rear diff in late 2017. Plugs done around 20k ago. I have been told it is immaculate but will see for myself soon. it certainly ticks all the boxes. noticed it had a few top up oil visits but they were spread out around 9k km and these were in its earlier life. its a 2 owner car also. My only slight concern is the comp pack suspension, I have probably been reading into it too much but lots of conflicting comments regarding ride quality. will be strange for me moving from my big spongy CL500, however I have had some bone shaking cars recently and was not too bad, my 996 911!!!!!!! i'm 45 on Monday but feel like a kid on Christmas eve!! Anyway ill keep you updated, wish me luck!! [IMG][/IMG] |
