2016 F10 M5 competition seized engine - wanting to sell as-is, input requested
Hello,
Apologies if this is not the right place. Sadly my relatively low mileage (approx 50K miles) 2016 M5 Competition seems to have encountered the dreaded spun bearing issue. I was distracted pulling away from a light (music, GF talking) forgetting it was in manual shift mode, and it tagged the limiter. Upshifted as soon as I noticed, but engine seized. Apparently this is enough to kill the engine - great rev limiter protection lol. Anyway, considering letting her go as BMW wants over $60K Canadian to put a new engine in. I am looking at RK Autowerks as well, figuring a new engine from them would cost around 20-30K Canadian installed depending on the build. But mainly here, I am curious what you guys think it could fetch if sold as-is (ballpark is fine). Also any tips for how to go about selling such a car as-is (i.e. where to post it for sale, besides this board of course). It has the full carbon brakes, B&O, nearly fully loaded options wise except for adaptive cruise. Very good condition exterior and interior, carbon fiber trim, etc. Was running absolutely fine prior to this. Thanks for any input! Last edited by varus50; 09-12-2024 at 06:50 PM.. Reason: Add Pic |

Sad to hear, but I’ve seen it happen a few times in this exact scenario.
With a running engine it’s worth about 35-40k in the states. Without, I don’t see many people paying more than 15k. If you like the car then you’ll have a brand new engine to enjoy for a long time. It’s what I would do. |

So I'm in this exact scenario. My 14' just had the engine seized (51,XXX) and my car is currently with RK Autowerks getting a rebuilt used block. I was lucky enough to still have an extended warrarnty who is covering about half. I decided to go with upgraded bearings but dont have enough funds to go full forged. I can promise you this, if you decide to shop used engines or have a dealer replace, you wont find anyone out there more affordable then RK Autowerks in TX...
Best of luck my friend, its not a fun experience! |

Do you happen to still have any extended warranty left? My car has 50,XXX miles and its a 2014 which I had an extended warranty on it. They are covering half the costs for what its worth. RK autowerks or a similar reputable shop will be your best bet. Selling these cars with a bad motor is not going to be easy unless your OK with taking the loss. I'm in exact same situation but decided to get a rebuilt motor and that will help offset the costs when I go to sell (a little).
I should have my car back in a couple weeks but this has been a journey... Still love the car and happy thus far with rebuilding. Best of luck bud and keep us updated on which direction you go.. |
