That is unfortunate. I wish them all a speedy recovery. The car held together pretty good for traveling that fast.

Back in the 60s and 70s the plane company Beechcraft made a private high performance single engine airplane called the Bonanza. The elite went out and got their pilots license and buying it in big numbers. They also wound up getting killed like mad. It was dubbed the "Doctor Killer". See despite the ability to afford it, they didn't have the competence to
Operate it. See JFK Jr.

This guy was going at 300km/h on a public road which is INSANE. Perhaps this driver knew what he was doing. But the mere variable of OTHERS sharing the same road shows some sort of invincibility by him. Like motorcyclists say. "it's not the bike that'll kill you, it's the other drivers." 300 Klicks is insanely fast. Close to F1 top speeds. On a public road, infested with gobs of incompetents (now matter how high the standard is there)?!? Madness.

300km/h leaves you with little reaction time to someone else's blunder. You're putting your trust out on a ridiculous limb.

That said hope they pull through and slow down for god sakes. What's the point? On a public road!?!?!

I hope that the occupants make a quick recovery and that the motorist who fled the scene faces whatever justice he has coming.

I am quite amazed that anyone could survive with that amount of damage. The new M5 appears to be an amazingly engineered machine.

Well, it IS allowed on the Autobahn. It's not like he was driving in excess of posted laws. The driver who cut him off is the one at fault. I've had these sorts of experiences on an almost daily basis in the "States", although the rather sedate 65MPH speed limits here do give a bit more reaction time.

Wake up. It's not against the law sure. As educated as German drivers are would you blindly trust someone you've never met to drive perfectly at all times? Really?

300km/h is hauling the mail dude. If anyone, ANYONE fucks up you're dead. This guy is lucky he isn't.

Also from what I hear any speed above 130 exposes driver to possible fines if it is found he is negligent.

Sure the idiot that cut him off is wrong. But why would you ever put yourself in a spot where said idiot could ever do anything that COULD kill you?!

This guy doing that speed leaves himself ZERO outs if someone else makes even the slightest error. This drivers judgement shows serious flaws IMO.

Lucky to be alive.

I wonder if their insurance will pay out? I've read that while the road may not be speed limited, some German insurers may not pay out if you are going over 130km/h.

This kind of speed is often met on german highways!
It was the problem of the driver who swiched on the fast lane without paying any attention!

Incredible event. The occupants are very fortunate to have their lives.

I read a lot of the comments and unless one has driven on autobahns it is not possible to comment on what is safe and what isnt. The simple fact is there are very few accidents on German autobahns. The road construction and design is such to allow for fast speeds in a safe environment. Behavior such as this driver who cut off the driver in an aggressive nature is not something that I can say is normal but rare.

Although I cannot speak for every German insurance available the few I have had over the years never had such caveat.

incredible accident, but the driver and the passenger survived, that's the most important. This shows us, how high technology and saftey the BMW are. Certainly you should drive a BMW as crazy, just because it's safe.

Wish the victims a fast recovery.

Why wouldn't the insurance pay out? He wasn't breaking the law, & even if he was....

I've been cut off several times while going North of 140 MPH. I can usually see it coming so I can react in time. There are those that will cut you off cause their jealous & just want to slow you down. Doesn't happen often but it does happen.

Holy, this just looks insane.
Best wishes and a quick recovery.

That remembers me on my accident 6 years ago, heading off from the highway onto a country road with my BMW 320 E46 still driving 100kmh and the last thing I saw was a small red car on an intersection driving straight in front of me from the right side.

I woke up on the hospital, the police told me what happened.

In the red car was a woman with her 2 year old daughter, she missed the STOP sign( thank god they survived) the woman gave to protocol that I swerved (must be a reflex) in the last second to avoid a crash, but was still hitting the front of her car. I shot across the road and was landing 100m away from the accident space, totally demolished and wrecked. All of us was shocked but recovered in a short time.

And that was with 100kmh, now imagine how it feels with 300kmh?
So please, drive safety everybody, there is a lot of blind drivers out there.

Really hope some people.would bother reading the article before posting a comment. On another note, this incident just shows how important it is to spend money on a proper car like a bmw besides the speed and fun factor.

FFS, how in the world would you notice a car coming at 186mph??? The M5 driver must have been an idiot, at 60 you would expect people to have more sense

Well, even if there is no general speed limit on the Autobahn, there is a "adivsory speed limit" of 130 km/h. If you exceed this limit and are involved in an accident, you can have partial liability so that the insurance will refuse to pay 100 %.
