Piston went on vacation (Kboom)

Hello Friends,

I want to share my experience and hope to give light to those in the dark tunnel.

my car 2013 m5
mods: DP,CP, tune and ssp clutches
Issue: car started smoking blue time to time, end up having oil come thru the oil cap.

FYI ths was not a tuning issue, i had 0 issues with my custom tune, injector did the trick.

After much research and looking at ridiculous prices from different builders and mechanics, i end up contacting someone i saw works on this cars very frequently, his name is TJ from pure performance in Texas.

I called TJ just to ask for pricing on a Monday morning, he took almost an hour to break down everything for me, he asked me to tell him all the details of how and when things started to happen, he explained to me the right way to fix the engine and the cheap way, he said he wont do a cheap fix as he can warranty a job he know is not right so he recommended to do it correctly, i agreed that he was the man to do the job and we agreed on a price( lower than anyone else had quoted) by Wednesday my car got picked up by a carrier arranged by TJ.

once the car arrived Tj paid the man and i paid TJ later that day, to my surprise, the next day the engine was out of the car, he sent me videos and pictures of him taking the engine down.

After taking the engine apart, he found a bad piston and cylinder, he took pics and videos and sent them to me, he took the injectors apart and showed me how they looked like and the one that was on cylinder 8 that was bad and advised me to get new ones all across to avoid any further issues down the road.

The next morning he called me and asked me if i wanted to wait for the engine block to return form the machine shop or he could do a block that he has as space for his own car just in case something happens to his, the block had brand new oem components and upgraded bearings, i said that was ok,
next day he send me pics of the engine coming together.

I was tested a video of my car turning on after just a week of being at the shop, i could not believe it, he test drove the car and it was smoking slot, he called me, he explained what was going on so he was going to take home so he could put some miles as the exhaust was full of oil even tho they tried to decrease it.

After two days, he called me and said that he was going to take the engine down to check on the heads to make sure the valves were in place, i got pics of one of my turbo that was in bad shape do to all the oil that went thru it, the seal was bad, so he found me some oem cores for cheap.

Engine goes back in, he puts the car back together, drove it for a few days with my consent, as he drove it he noticed one rear tire was very bad so he called me to ask how i was going to deal with it since i was driving the car from Houston TX to orlando Fl, he also asked me if i wanted my carbon fiver lip and wing put on since they were inside the car, he said he was bored at home so he would do it at no charge.

I flew to Tx, took an uber to his shop, where my car had to almost new PSS tires that he only charged me $200, the car was clean and ready to go.

I drove 18 hour on a trip that was 14 hours long as there was bad weather most of the ride home, car did not skip a beat, a few days later i took the car to get an oil change, as that was going on i was on the phone with TJ because he wanted to know the conditions of the oil and if there was anything estrange, after the oil change he said enjoy because i know you will send it, i asked him are you sure the engine can take it, he said 100%, so i did a few logs and dragy runs so my car was back to normal, its been 1700 miles in which the last 300 have been sending it here and there as its intended.

So far so good, Tj has been in communication with me even to check my logs and make sure the car is running as it should.

Sorry if i miss spell or missing details i did this post on my last minutes of my working day, have a good day guys!

Thanks for this. When you say you "end up having oil come thru the oil cap", could you elaborate on this? What oil cap are you referencing?

Great mechanic you found there albeit far away and he offered you those tyres together with remounting your spoilers/fins.The drive back must have been interesting with that bad weather I've seen on the news.

Good to know, relatively local considering he's only about 3 hours away on the SW side of the Houston metroplex. I will follow him on FB; I always enjoy seeing the pics from Troy Jeup's builds. Sounds like a good shop, and that they are enthusiasts as well.

my cost was around 10k, it could go up or down, thats the shop owner discretion.

at first my concern was getting stranded in the middle of no were at night, but after driving the car 200 miles my confidence level went up, car idle normal when i stop, no weird hesitation or anything.

i can only say my experience has been very positive, i just share because i was very frustrated with the prices, every shop wants 15k or more even for a rebuild.

Thanks for sharing and glad it worked out for you. All good!

What is sad is why was this required in first place. There are quite a few threads here and on other forums about BMW being a leader among luxury car makers and them beating MB in sales. Then you see equal number of threads where drivers complain of engine or critical component failures. This makes you believe that BMW like most other budget manufacturers are going for quantity over quality.

I understand and get 2-5% failure rate, however, the number seems to be a lot higher in recent times, specially on the F10 M5s as these cars cross the 50,000 & 75,000 mile marks.

you also need to factor in that these cars are 7+ years old now. Most could have been lease returns and only serviced at dealership when under warranty or have only seen dealer recommended 15k mile oil changes. Also a ton more people modify the m5 vs Mercedes owners. This particular motor failed due to an issue other than maintenance. we believe it ran lean.

i would love to say that its a small numbers but i now know some many people with blown engines is not even funny, 2 of my closest friends who beat their cars less than i do went before mine, same issue with injectors, broken pistons, also see it on the f90 too

My only question is, since we know that there have been issues with the "fueling" (IE leaky injectors) wouldn't having "Tunes" that alter the factory fuel map and delivery sorta increase the chance of the faulty injector issue?

I would think so but i seen the same issue on stock car, as matter of fact i meet someone with jb4 stage 1 and stock after that blow his engine on the injector, gets his engine replaced and bone stock same issue after a summer.

OP - sorry about the catastrophic failure. Pretty sure every single one of us fears the day. Mine is about to click over the 50k mark and I have a degree of angst in the back of my mind about it. This is my second F10 M5 and I have zero intention of getting rid of it anytime soon. I love this car.

My brother is a BMW master tech, he recommends running a fuel system cleaner thru the tank every 3rd fill up as a conservative preventive measure for injector failure. He also said most of the s63’s he has seen with catastrophic failure have been stock, so he doesn’t feel strongly that basic mods/tunes are a common culprit.

Either way - I’m glad you got it back on the road for many more years of enjoyment!

Any particular cleaner recommended? I have not thought of that but thats probably a good idea.

What happens with the injectors on these cars ?

I ran the injector leak test on ista and passed.
