reviving this thread. My car had a coolant flush and just recently, (a few months after) i got an intermittent warning that the coolant MIGHT be low. I topped it off (engine coolant) but now figured i shoudl check the turbo coolant as well. Cap seems MIGHTY on there, do you press down and rotate it or just rotate?

Got it! THanks for the speedy response. I see theres no fill level, and the line level of coolant was about 8-9 inches from the port.. Should I top up?

You sure you got the right coolant. As your standing in front of the car looking back on the car the engine coolant resevoir is on the right side. The turbo intercooler/dme coolant is the smaller oblong res on the left near the trickle charge terminal. The engine one on the right side, level should be below the filler neck but visible at the bottom, shine a torch on it.The left one should be just above the max marker but well below the top of reservoir. Both require 50/50 mix of BMW a/freeze and distilled water.

Cool, thanks! I got them mixed up but regardless, but need topping up. Figured the one w the high pressure cap is the one for the engine!
Thanks again! |

Just an FYI since its been asked (and answered)...but some are still curious as to tell how far to fill the engine coolant in the filler neck. I'm going to assume that the S63 and the N63TU (engine coolant) filler neck and reservoir are similar...since neither has any visible indicator to tell how full the reservoir is. The BMW TIS states for the n63TU that the coolant level should come up to between 110mm-160mm (4"-6") below the top of the fill neck. If you look around your garage/home...you can quickly find something to use as a measuring tool...mark off the correct fill length and use it to stick down into the fill neck (ie, straw, chop stick, ruler, old cardboard box top). And if you do take one of your wife's cooking tools like a wood spoon handle or her turkey baster...remember to just buy her a new one and keep the one you took in the garage...woulnd't want to make the family sick from using a tool that has coolant residue left on it.

Dude, I am pretty sure the left/blue one is the low temp intercooler coolant tank. My lower center radiator/intercooler radiator hit a rock yesterday, and it sprayed coolant out through the grill. Right after I stopped the car, the coolant from here is like my body temp. After like 2 hours, I checked the Left/Blue coolant tank, it was empty.
http://m5carblog.blogspot.com/2013/02/cooling.html This post shows the turbo water cooling line is connected to the engine cooling circuit, and the low temp coolant line only for DME and intercooler I never know about my car until bad things happen, but its a little expensive to learn. BMW a/freeze 50/50 mix with distilled water.
* With your temps there then you may need to add more a/freeze like 60/40. Last edited by M5Rick; 01-28-2024 at 11:04 AM.. |

What Rick said. You can get the coolant from the dealership and the distilled water from a grocery store.
Use a chart like this to determine your mixture for your lowest temperature of the year. Note: the more water you have the better cooling it will provide. I will be going 70 water / 30 coolant at my next change. |

Another thread revival as this is the post that keeps on giving.
Does anyone know which coolant system uses each of the aux water pumps? There are two aux pumps. Looking from the front of the car one down on the left side and one on the right side. Looks like engine coolant to me? File attached for info. |
