Mysterious hole in trunk lid

Hi all!

Did anybody ever encounter the following hole in the trunk lid? I discovered it after removing the license plate frame, obviously I need to seal it now. Does anybody know if this hole is by factory or added later on? Function?

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Looks like it's been drilled after the fact and someone has put some paint on just to protect the bare metal. No idea what for though.

On pre-2016 cars that is done for aftermarket rear view camera connections. Not sure but this is definitely not from Factory.

Thanks for the fast replies, I figured the hole was drilled afterwards to install some sort of device. The rear view camera is a factory option in this car, so I wonder what else it could have been for.
Anyways, I will get a rubber seal to close this hole properly and make sure no water will enter the lid and it won't rust. The hole was sealed with a black silicone type before, I removed the biggest junk and the color around the hole was left over. There's no sign of any rust or water damage, so I'm just sealing it and keep an eye on it.

Thanks again for your support, great community here and always helpful 👍🏻

Could have been for rear facing laser jammers?

In the US, rear facing cameras were only made mandatory for 2016+ MYs.

Have seen a lot of cars (non-M, BMWs) where they drill it there or just under the license plate and use the license plate mount to hold the camera in place.

Reverse cameras were a standard option on all F10 M5's.

When I was looking for mine I saw a few without a reverse camera. I'm in the UK though so that may make a difference.
