Not the wind whistling in the windy city? kidding.
As said previously if its not alternator then check out the steering pump.

I have a whine as well most audible between 2.5k and 3k rpm. I've replaced the tensioner and the alternator and belts. I also replaced the oil pump for fun. I briefly ran the car without the main belt to rule out power steering. It has been doing it for at least 5k miles. Seems to be getting a bit louder but I could just be getting more paranoid over time. I finally took it to the dealer and they said they had no idea. They said “it might be normal”. I think it is annoying and drowns out the good noises.

Not sure how to upload a video but if you are on the m5 Facebook group: https://m.facebook.com/groups/849512...ibextid=v7YzmG

I still have no idea what the whine is. I gave up replacing random things, just hoping someone else figures it out some day.

Maybe this explains why BMW added the active sound design to mask off the whine everybody can hear

On topic, I can hear a whine and it sounds like it’s coming from the engine. I’m suspecting it’s the turbochargers and something to do with the hot V design. I have my active sound off.

I suddenly got the supercharger whine. Replaced the tensioner and all is well. Turning the pulley it was very obvious why it was loud. Two very clear hot spots.

Do any of you guys with the "supercharger whine" have 6MTs or are these all DTC cars? My 2013 6MT whines like crazy but it seems like the transmission to me. I did a transmission flush and it didn't help, the dealer said they would replace the transmission for $19,600 and I politely said no thanks.

What were the characteristics of the tensioner sound?

I didn’t see this mentioned, but my ‘14 m6 whines like crazy when driving in cold temps (<50degF) and had it checked out.

Independent mechanic whom I feel is reliable, said that whine I hear while driving after a cold start in cold weather, is the transmission fluid on my smg. He explained that it because the fluid is viscous when cold, it makes a whining noise.

The noise definitely goes away after a few minutes of driving. It’s been that way since I’ve had the car so I don’t drive it much when it’s really cold lol.

What did the transmission fluid look like when drained? Glittery?
I wonder if the whining noise is just a characteristic of the gearbox?

I wish I know what the fluid looked like, I failed to ask the service advisor or the technician. If I would have done it myself I would have probably sent a sample out for analysis to find out if there was any metal in the fluid. But now I'll never know.

My gut tells me the whine is not a normal characteristic or every other 6MT owner would experience it and hopefully talk me off the ledge. I also own an E90 with a 6MT and it makes no such noise. They have essentially the same transmission (GS6-53DZ in the E90 vs GS6-53BZ in the F10). I don't know what the difference is besides the cooler but it doesn't seem like one would whine and the other wouldn't.

Have you ever had the fluid replaced in your DCT? I wonder if that would stop your noise completely, fresh fluid in a power steering pump has that effect for the exact same reason.

FWIW, the whining in my 6MT happens at all temperatures, including after many miles at operating temperature and in very warm weather before and after the fluid flush.

I had a transmission drain and fill at 25k miles and I have 34k now. It never changed the whining when cold, but drove the car yesterday in warm weather and no whine.
