Official BMW F10 M5 Break In Service Checklist
The 1,200 mile service on the F10 M5 is:
Change engine oil and filter Change differential oil Change transmission oil (6 spd manual only - no service to DCT) The attached .pdf is straight from the BMW TIS. If anything else was/wasn't done then they didn't do it right. Mike |

How can you find out if the diff oil was changed on break in? The service book doesn't have an entry for diff oil. Would the dealer have a documentary record? I don't think that I was given any paperwork.

Good to know. So there is no need for the technician to drive my car AT ALL.
No wash and no drive please.

I doubt anything has changed (but admittedly don't know for sure). I have to admit I haven't been keeping up as much as in the past since I don't have the M5 anymore... Mike |

Mine is due in on wed for servicing 1200 miles. But they have said it takes a whole day... can't see why?
Had it clarified by two people there. Cheers Mat |

Shoot, I'd bring them the aforementioned checklist and let them tell you, actually SHOW you that it IS NOT the list. If it is, they do not get the car for the whole day. Make an appointment, and anything longer than 2 hours ain't happening. Don't wash it, don't drive it, don't breath on it. I'm doing mine after traveling for two weeks (actually-after The Masters). My dealer told me I can make an appt, and wait (also using my furnished/preferred oil). They've also given me the name of the tech (best one they have) who will do it. There will be very few times this car sees the dealer; this will be one. I'm going to offer them some kind of bribery to be with him for the whopping 45 minutes this should take. I'm not happy about it, but it is going to happen on my terms, or not at all.

Time to perform the 1,200 mile service
The time to perform the service probably has little to nothing to do with how long they want the car, it is a technician scheduling issue.
In reality the service takes closer to a hour, I've watched it. What they don't know is which hour of the day a tech will be available and they don't want to commit to a specific hour of the day in advance. Given the tremendous variability in the time to perform different repair/service jobs it really isn't possible for them to know days in advance exactly when a specific hour will be available to do your 1,200 mile service. And since techs are paid by the job the techs need to be busy pretty much all the time to make a decent living. The dealer can't afford to have "extra" techs waiting around to service one hour jobs. They want your car there for the day so they can be confident they'll be able to find the hour to do your job. After all, if you came in for your one hour job late in the day and they failed to get it done, because they weren't finished with someone else's job that was promised that day, I suspect you'd be pissed! If they didn't get the other job finished because they pulled the tech off that car to do your one hour service the other customer would likely be pissed. Having your car for a full day increases the chance you or someone else won't become an unhappy customer. Seems like a fair arraignment to me! After all, some day you may be "the other" customer! |

Took mine in this week for the 1,200 mile running-in check. Made an appointment and they said it would take 90 minutes and I could wait. It took exactly 90 minutes ... and they fed me lunch!
Changed the motor oil and diff fluid.

My service rep told me they also activate Launch Control at the 1,200 service.

So did everyone keep their foot out of it for 1200 miles? I was told to keep it under 5500 rpm. Only have about 500 miles on it so far and have not lit it up yet.
I asked my dealer about any "fine tuning" and he said this engine doesn't need anything. Sounds like just changing the fluids. Activating the Launch Control? Haven't heard that one before. |
