navi update question

I'm currently stationed in south korea with my 2013 US SPEC M5 and my navigation doesn't work since it still have the US map. one of my friend gave me a USB with korean map that he updated his Korean SPEC 3-series.

Can I use this USB to change my map? would it work? can this cause a issue in my idrive system? I'm afraid to give this a try since I don't have a us map to load if this doesn't work.

Thank you

Unfortunately, it won't at least it's not as easy as popping in the USB stick and loading the FSC code for the Korean maps.

There's three major variants of the NBT navigation system which the system installed in your 2013 M5, although this also holds true for most of the BMW navigation systems. There's JPN (Japan), CKT (China, Korea, Taiwan) and RoW (Rest of the World).

While the hardware is generally the same (except for the radio boards), each variant uses a different software/firmware and each variant uses a different format of maps which aren't cross-compatible with each other.

It's possible to convert your RoW unit into a CKT unit which would allow you to load Korean maps on it, it would require some coding and reflashing of the unit's firmware via E-NET/E-Sys etc.

You'd also then have to get it converted back to it's original state when you return back to the US in order to load the North America maps unto it.

Ah I see, so can you convert the RoW unit into CKT? and how long and how much would it cost me to convert? can you convert remotely? I'm probably wont go back to the state for few more years so it could be a good idea to convert and reconvert when I go back. also I do have E-net cable and possibly able to download E-NET/E-SYS. but where can I download the firmware?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
