Check engine light - what do I do?

My check engine light came on last night. Nothing is noticeably wrong. Have I any alternative to taking the car to the dealer and how worried should I be?

Get the codes read first. A generic obd scanner can get you started, if it's something more involved you'll need bmw specific diagnostics
