My father was a farmer - so I don't really remember not "working" to some extent. I remember driving the bean truck across the field when I could not press the gas and see over the dash at the same time, so it was press, slide up and look to steer then slide down and press again. LMAO When I could do both I was on a tractor 15-16 hours a day during season. First clock punching was bagging groceries at a store for $3.35 per hour (MINUS UNION DUES!) during the off season for gas money when I was close to drivers license age.
No complaints. I enjoy working and when I was in my low 20's held 3 jobs (4 if you count helping pops on the weekends when needed) for a time and still have life long friends I made at those jobs. A good work ethic can get you a long ways.

I setup a storefront on my driveway to sell baby toads to other kids. I think I was about 9 or 10 years old. Sold them for 25 cents a piece, or 5 for a buck. Made like $7.50 or something. My parents shut it down after a day but I recall my dad being proud of my initiative.

^ My son makes donuts and sells bracelets in our front yard - him and his buddy can make $50 in a few hours - fire trucks stop sometimes - awesome to see people supporting the little kids ambition.

OP is talking about *paid* jobs, dude. I'm pretty sure every guy does that 'job' for free.

She moved in with me and my family (it gets complicated with her parents so I’ll leave that part out). We all lived in a small apartment. Her and I both had part time jobs and went to school. My family didn't have much money back then.

My first real job was working in my dad's body shop sweeping floors and some dismantling and prep work. At 16, I worked as a cook's assistant in a nice steakhouse and eventually to a full cook. At 18 I went into the Army. I worked in signal intelligence and after getting out and earning my MSEE, I work for a space company that builds communications satellites and much more.

Working as a shelf filler for Superdrug, after a couple weeks the manager there told me he was taking things home i.e. stealing by putting things round the back and collecting them later and if I wanted to do the same. I replied his boss and the police would be interested in his system if I gave them a call then he went a blood red and said he was joking.
I told the others about that and they said it was a trick by him to weed out thieves, naturally I added that the manager must have the brains of a rocking horse thinking he would catch ppl out like that. Needless to say I left shortly but refrained from telling him what he could do with his chicken s**t outfit. Last edited by M5Rick; 05-31-2023 at 07:26 AM.. |

The first job period was a waiter at a retirement community. First "real job" out of college was for a video game company.

16 years old...car wash attendant at Enterprise Rent-a-Car in Snellville, Georgia. First day on the job I had to wash 53 cars and clean the interiors as well. Man that was a rough day that I'll never forget. But that job was an awesome experience for me. The best part was that I was able to earn and save enough money to put a bumpin' sound system in my hand me down Toyota Corolla after 3 months. hehe

One of the things you don't realize in the military at first is that if you work in signals intelligence, you can leverage that security clearance when you get out. In my own case, I worked at it for 25 years and when I retired, could've joined the "beltway bandit" community but was not interested -- I didn't want to have anything to do with it anymore.

Grew up on a farm so first job was not to get killed. First paying job was errand boy and rag washer at a bicycle shop for $.75 an hour before child labor laws. Haven't stopped working since.

Worked part time as a lifeguard and later swimming teacher from about 16. Kept it up through university, pretty decent money for a part time student job.

I didn't get my first job until after I graduated from high school. My parents wanted me to concentrate on school and the bit of talent I seemed to have playing baseball. I could have used some extra money but it is what it was.
My first job was a busboy at a Village Inn Pancake House in Colorado Springs the summer of 1983. That taught me the value of a good restaurant and how hard waitresses and waiters and the cook staff worked. It also taught me the faster and better I bussed the tables the more tips they would share with me. They shared generously to me because I busted my butt!!! |

During college, I worked for a couple of months at a small workshop during the summer break. We were printing designs on ceramic tiles, applying glaze on top, and then firing them in the kiln. It was an interesting job, but quite demanding as well. We had to stand by the conveyor, monitor the product quality, and handle hot items. Additionally, the workshop was very hot and noisy, considering it was all during the summer. However, I earned some money for my expenses.

I interviewed for a Management Trainee position back in like 2012. I went through three rounds of interviews, then decided to do some last minute internet research and discovered that Management Trainee was a made up job title to mean basically front desk staff and I would be signing out cars and washing them all day in a suit/tie.

First job was when I was 16 at Wendy's in the early 00s. I got paid about 25 cents more than minimum wage. At first it was cool, because I worked with some of my friends on the evening shift. Fucked around all the time, ate many many many free Big Bacons, chicken nuggets, Biggie fries, and Frostys. I probably gained 10 pounds in 3 months.
What they didn't know is that I had dropped out of high school and technically didn't need to work the evening shift. Once my manager - who was a total dildo - figured that out, he moved me to day shift. I don't know if you've ever given a good hard look at the people who work fast food during the day shift, but many of them are there for questionable decisions they made in their past. 16 and working around some very, VERY strange people wasn't really desirable, so one day I just never went back and never answered any of their calls. Went to work as a bullseye bitch at Target a few months later and managed to score like $2 more per hour. I worked with a bunch of people my own age and it was actually a pretty fun job as far as retail goes.
