One Chip Challenge

I did this yesterday. Biggest mistake of my life. For those of you who don't know - the one chip challenge is basically a chip coated in carolina reaper chili. The challenge is to eat the single chip and I guess record your reaction? I'm not entirely sure at this point. Allow me to document my experience:

2:00pm - After staring at this chip that had been sitting on my desk for weeks ever since a "friend" of mine mailed it to me and challenged me to try it (friend is in quotations because I wouldn't wish this upon any of my friends) - I decided, with a meeting-free afternoon, to take the plunge and try it.

2:15pm - I've eaten the single black chip, which turned my entire mouth and tongue blue. The chip had a god crunch to it, and it was definitely spicy, but what I wasn't prepared for was just how awful it tasted. I can't even describe the taste... it just tasted bad.

2:19pm - Now the intense burn begins... I can handle this, I love spicy food and have a high spice tolerance. It's definitely one of the most intense burns I've experienced, but I ain't no bitch.... yet

2:45pm - The burn is still there and I've had enough... so I drink some milk and chew on some ice to subside some of the burn. All is well minus the random burps that bring back that awful flavor.

3:30pm - I'm picking my daughter up from school. On our way home, it hits me..... INTENSE abdominal pain and burning. I have the AC cranked as high as possible, seat coolers on, and I'm sweating. Simply lifting my foot to press/release the clutch with each gearshift is a tall task all of a sudden.

3:45pm - I run to the bathroom. After the bathroom break I take some tums, and I'm OK now.

4:00pm - 8:00pm - Intermittent extreme abdominal pain and more medication... tums.. mylanta... pepcid...

8:00pm - 1:00am - In and out of the bathroom with intense burning sensation in abdomen. I have to try and sleep partly sitting up.

1:00am - 5:00am - After more medication and a heating pad resting on my stomach, I'm finally able to get some sleep.

5:00am - current - For the past hour and a half I've been in and out of the bathroom... the pain is mostly gone. Now I'm just REALLY hungry but afraid to eat anything.

Let this be a warning - DO NOT do this challenge unless you're offered a ridiculous sum of money, and even then, think long and hard about how much pain you're willing to bear. I feel like a complete idiot doing it for free. Don't be like me. Be smarter.

My wife and I like spicy food, but I don't care for stupid hot just for the sake of stupid hot. Thanks for the heads up.

Yeah this is just completely idiotic. It's one thing if it tasted good... but it tastes awful on top of the intestine destroying torture. And you're reminded of that awful taste with each burp.

Milk does nothing for subsiding spice, other than coat it.

Next time try fresh lime or lemon wedges.

Won't help with the intestinal issues though, I'm just talking about the mouth.

I have two chips from 2019 (I think?) still in the "coffin" and will stay that way. I'm no hero.

We were going to try this at work as a few of us like really spicy stuff, be we all puss'd out.

Glad we passed on it.

I had employees do this a few months back. They did it during a going away party for an employee that liked really hot stuff. I thought it was an internal challenger, not something promoted by the chip manufacturer. Well, we wound up calling 911.

I was so pissed when I found out what it really was. How can a company promote something that is making people sick?

Nooooo I don't usually do stupid things... and am too old... I didn't even hear about the tide pod challenge until it starting hitting the major news networks.

At least this is considered an edible item, although I'm not sure it should be.

Yes... DO NOT attempt unless you enjoy extreme abdominal pain. I can't speak for the 2019 chip and the differences between that and this 2022 chip... but best to not find out.

Yeah..... my wife was afraid she might have to take me to the emergency room. I don't think it was THAT serious, but it was 10-12 hours of torture.

Sugar does the trick with helping with the burning in the mouth. When I was in high school a friend was from Pakistan. His mother made this chili that was off the scale hot, and I like really spicy food. My mouth was burning so bad that when I drank anything it made it worse. He then gave me a big tablespoon of sugar to swish around in my mouth and the burn went away. Luckily I didn't have and gastro effects.

I happen to be from Pakistan Yeah I have a very high spice tolerance... but this chip is outrageous. And it's not the initial burn that I was concerned about... it was the after effects that were pure torture.

I was able to eat a bag of the ghost pepper chips from that brand (not in one sitting). I'll draw the line at ghost peppers in general, they actually have some flavor, not burning death.

I wouldn't know.... never had tik tok. but apparently the chip gets hotter every year as they change up the ingredients.

I mean it's summer now..so it maybe re launched..it was made for TT..called the Tik Tok 3 min challenge or something. I noticed all of the little stop and rob hood rat stores around work quit carrying the chips. They used to have giant displays set in coffins..

I did the challenge with a buddy last year and I'll say this; I've been accidentally maced before and I would GLADLY get maced again before I eat another one of those chips.

Update - It's now been nearly 24 hours. Symptoms have mostly subsided... but still having some mild bouts of diarrhea. Trying to eat bland foods.

When you work on a ward during day shift, those highly paid administrators, bean counters and some Holier Than Thou MDs have the bad habit of raiding our station kitchenette and helping themselves to our food. Maybe I should fill regular chip bags with that stuff.
