when did all these snaps, crackles, pops etc become so popular with cars?
i remember growing up cars, even supercars, didn't make these stupid sounds all the time. ferraris porsches lambos etc they had great sounding exhausts, but no farting was included is this to please the fast and furious (and tasteless) crowd? i exepct that kind of crap on civic type Rs and GTis etc but no proper drivers cars (driven by peope over the age of 18) https://www.youtube.com/shorts/7SL4ioIjMi4

I'm 52 and as far back as I can remember race cars, and even modified street cars have had exhaust sound artifacts. Many of my previous cars had pops and bangs here and there, especially my '06 Exige, which does it natively.
I do agree that there can be too much of a good thing though, and wish it wasn't so prolific now, but it's just one more way for people to get attention, so it is what it is. I'll take ALL them over a damn Harley at 110 db. |

To a certain extent it feels good to hear and feel the motor of your car doing it's thing. I do think that the added burbles and pops from tuning is a bit overdone. I toyed around with my MHD settings and recall being able to have almost 2 seconds of burbles and pops when engine braking/downshifting. Went back to stock settings immediately.

Throttle overrun is not a new phenomenon as it goes back many years. It was largely limited to exotics; however, like a lot of other things, it makes its way downstream and becomes mainstream. For example, when Porsche debuted the Tiptronic gearbox in the late 80s, it was revolutionary and limited to that manufacturer. Fast forward 25 years, and it's in every vehicle under the sun from mundane commuter cars, family haulers and luxury sports coupes.
I find the exhaust sounds on these late model cars to be contrived and inorganic. Simply put, it just doesn't sound good. It's not fair to call out certain cars (Civic Type Rs and GTIs), because it cuts across the spectrum at this point. My F80 M3 ZCP had it and the sticker on that car was just over $80K. It was on my F80 M3 CS and the sticker was >$100K. It's also present on the G8x. There are also people who drive these luxury sports cars who live for the snaps, crackles, and pops.

Oh... I was going to say when the first sentient human-type had one slip out. - probably the best laugh humanity has ever known- lost to history.
I get it on a race car and love it. As a matter of fact, I love burbles every now and then, but I cannot stand cracks and pops on a street car. can not stand. |

I was just having this conversation the other day. I enjoy the backfire to some extent... when it's natural and not obnoxiously loud, it makes me smile. What I don't like is some of those obnoxious gunshot sounding pops and bangs. That's just a nuisance.
It also depends on the car/engine. If it's a throatier sounding car, then I appreciate some natural backfire sounds. But if it's a high revving, screaming motor, I don't think those pops and bangs would be fitting (i.e. a V12 Ferrari or an LFA).

My quick and concise opinion: The subtle noises from natural overrun sound great. The obnoxious indigestion from burble tunes sound like absolute trash.

Off throttle - no spark/fuel needed
Pops/bangs - adds spark/fuel simply to make noise DUMB! It is not a 'normal' engine noise. It's artificial noise added to look cool, nothing more. |

I think it`s getting ridiculous. Almost every Mercedes GTR, AMG c63, BMW M3, M4, etc., that I see has a machine gun fart can thing going on. I like to hear a nice exhaust sound, but these backfiring exhaust noises do nothing for me.

I don't recall the Ferrari 512BB having farts Or the Lamborghini countach etc Maybe it's related to when turbos became the norm

Actually the M3s bother me now It used to be a grown up classy car Not it's turned into a ricer for teenagers Can't see how that's a useful demographic to target with a 90k car

Today's exhausts are orders of magnitude more appealing than cars of that era. Base 911s sounded like original Beetles back then. |

If you need a fart, fair enough. If you don't need a fart, forcing it is likely to result in shit. Either way, no need to do it in anyone's face. |

I'm not a fan of the fart cans on 4 bangers, super burbles, etc either - but I chalk it up to just getting old. I'm sure my neighbors hated my 69 Dodge Charger with turbo turndowns when I was 16 too - such is life.
I've never liked "loud" exhaust anyway. A nice rumble at idle, throaty at WOT - yes. Loud for the sake of loud - no. Even the Harley riders who have to constantly crack their throttle to "impress" everyone at every stoplight drives me insane. Sounds like shit to me. "Yes - we are ALL impressed with the motorcycle that you paid more than a car for that can't outrun a $750 used 250 Ninja......" I'll always fight for your right to own it - but does not mean I have to like it. LOL #GetOffMyGrass

Ever since ppl placed too much crazy emphasis on sound, and some guys need to look themselves in the mirror. I remember I had a thread/poll about if you'd rather have a car that handles great w no exhaust noise vs the opposite and many ppl chose the great sounding car. Just amazing how different ppl have different concepts of what makes a proper sports/sporty car.

Eh, to each their own. I'm going to be 40 this year and I'm still endlessly entertained by exhaust burbles, pops, bangs, turbo spooling, whooshing and BOV ppffffttttttttt noises. Of course, I do love the option of drive modes in these newer cars that can help neuter most of that drama when needed.
