Is M5 a good choice for my next car?

Hi Everybody

I'm a newbie in this forum. I own a e90 328i. And I like it so much. Right now I'm thinking to change a better car My requirement is 4 door Sedan. And my budget is around $60,000. So I think M5 is a good choice? I know BMW is pretty good at inline 6 engine. But I'm not sure if V8 is like inline reliable. I read F10 M5 articles for almost 1 year. I know BMW's V8 is not that reliable as inline 6. So could any one give me some advices about this choice. Cause I don't want spend all my time in mechanic shop...

Thanks

Quick answer is yes, it's a good car. Make sure it's been properly serviced. And with your budget, you should definitely get an extended warranty for that extra piece of mind

Take a look at my fully built 2014 CP M5 I have for sale in listings. 10k on built motor, and whole drive train beefed up to withstand the power. Car is in great shape, no accidents, just serviced and new rear tires.

I have a '14 CPO F10 M5. Have also owned a '13 F10 M5 & a '15 F01 750i.

The M5 is great. Massive HP & TQ. Total luxury + performance in one package. But a few things to keep in mind if you do take the plunge:

1) Try to get a '14 or later year model after the refresh. The earlier versions tend to burn oil. I had a '13 and added 1 quart monthly. The turbos also broke. Never tracked it. It was a semi-weekend car.

2) Get an extended warranty. Fixing the turbos on my '13 would have cost $20K. Repairing anything is expensive. Warranty saved me.

3) Insurance will be considerably more expensive with a V8 motor car. Check w/ your provider to get an estimate.

4) Try to test drive one to see if you're okay with the larger size. The car will be less nimble around corners than a 3 series. Maneuvering in and out of traffic on a freeway though isn't hard.

Good luck!

Thanks your advices! The N63/S63 engine has 3 upgrades. The latest one is 2016. After that S63 engine is pretty similar to F90 M5's engine. I agree with you that M5 is a car with performance and luxury. And the price is lower than E63 AMG. For the extend warranty, do you have any good suggestions? I heard there are two kind extend warranty. One is only protect your power train another is protect your whole car.

I bought my car CPO from a BMW dealer & paid almost $6K for an extension on the warranty for 36 months. Below is a list of what is and what is not covered. It can be a little tricky. I just took it in to get my charge pipes replaced as I noticed cracking in one of them. However as the part is a rubber hose, it was deemed a wear & tear item and was not covered. Overall I think it basically means anything that is not supposed to break vs something that needs replacing because it wears down. I think that if the car will be your daily that you should budget an extra $10K for a full warranty.

What's Covered?
In general : The Certified Pre-Owned BMW Limited Warranty is designed to protect owners from defects in materials and workmanship on covered parts and components. The broad coverage includes the parts and systems listed below except where specifically noted in the 'Not Covered' section of The Certified Pre-Owned BMW Protection Plan Consumer Information Statement (available for examination at your BMW center)

Engine
Automatic/Manual Transmission
Front Suspension
Rear Suspension

Brakes
ABS Brake System
Electrical
Air Conditioning/Heating System

Interior/Exterior
Fuel System
Final Drive Assembly, Propeller Shaft

What's Not Covered?

Wear and Tear
All wear and tear items as defined in The Certified Pre-Owned BMW Protection Plan Consumer Information Statement (including all suspension parts and components).

Body and Interior

For those with no warranty then worn turbos can be removed being easily accessible and rebuilt at a specialist..2k max?20k would get you a whole fitted short exchange engine at least.
