I'm not sure if it looks too restrictive or not. I would have to have a look at mine again but as I said I'm no expert in exhaust flow etc.

You can't straight pipe that section as the X pipe is there to allow the gases to merge which affects back pressure etc.

There's a reason for BMW utilizing an X setup; I believe it's mostly for a more pleasing sound but I've read it does a better job of exhaust scavenging resulting in more low end tq. If you look at most aftermarket exhausts, they retain the X-pipe section, albeit, improve upon it.
