M5 + Snow don't mix
In case anyone living in the northeast is considering buying an M5, please strongly consider keeping something AWD or an SUV for days when the roads haven't been adequately salted. Still the best car ever! Just does not play well in the snow.

Wrong, wrong, wrong.
I'm on 20-inch Dunlop SP Winter Sports and I do just fine in the snow. Easy on the throttle and it's all good. With good winter tires will have more traction than your average SUV driving around on all-seasons. Of course, if the snow gets deep enough, the M5 is too low to drive, but that's a totally different issue and one you don't see much in the Northeast where 4-5 inches tends to shut down all the roads anyway. |

On stock tires in the Northeast, no way.... With a 19 or even 20 and a good snow tire, you will do as well and brake better than an all wheel drive car with all season tires.
Add some weight to the trunk, and with that amazing differential and curb weight you should have no issues in up to 5 inches of snow. I have blizzaks in my 135i with the electronic crap diff, and I still get by just fine. You have to smart with the pedals and not abuse the torque. My new M5 will likely get stock 19s with whatever snow I can find in the thinest allowable size, and I'll be golden.

exactly you are talking about a RWD car on summer tires.
OP - They are called summer tires for a reason. Don't try to use them in winter conditions. The point is the M5 is very usable on snow tires in the snow.

With snow tires, it will play okay, not very well. My Porsche Cayenne with snow tires plays very well. The most fun I have ever had in an automobile doing anything, at any time, was driving my previous Audi RS4 with Dunlop Winter Sports in 8" fresh powder. What a complete blast that was !!!
That said, most who can afford an M5 can afford a second more dedicated winter car, even if it is just a Subaru or something.

M5 comes with Michelin PSS - best summer tire around. Brochure also states it comes with run flats, but we all know thats not true.

Whoever told you that is dangerous. Instead of saying nothing, they said something that is not only dead wrong but also put you at risk if you went out driving in the snow on the stock tires. M5s come with summer performance tires that should not really be driven on once the temps drop below 40 degrees and never driven in the snow. They are also wrong about there being no winter option. BMW offers a wheel (model 408) specifically designed to be used for winter tires. I'm running Bridgestone Blizzacks, size 255/40 19 on all 4 corners. Work great in the snow.

Drove from Milwaukee to Chicago in snow/ice storm last weekend with M winter 408 wheel& tire setup with Perrelli Sottozeros . No issues... The traction control systems on the M5 did a fantastic job.. I easily passed many SUVs with AWD on what I assume are all season tires. I did feel the traction control and stability control kick in several times but the car handled very well and was completely predictable. In case you think it was light ice, when I parked the car, the entire front number was covered in ice. So much so the front proximity sensors blared and lit up red when I put the car in reverse due to the packed ice covering the entire front of the car!

I also have the BMW factory recommended winter tire/wheel combo (19" 408m with the Pirelli Winter Sottozero S II ). I have had to deal with ice and snow a number of times here and I am surprised at how well this high horsepower/torque rear wheel drive car does on the ice and snow. As I stated in another thread, the only issue I have is my concern with snow deeper than probably about 3 to 4 inches. The concern there is not that I wouldn't be able to get around in the ice and snow that deep, but I don't want a hidden chunk of ice or anything else that would damage the front of the car or anything on the underside of the car. With as low as the front is, it's a concern at least for me.

M5 + winter tires are fine up to around 15cm -20cm of snow of local roads & highway, but the traction control will kick in very often to get a better grip of the roadway condition. I do find a bit tricky if the car is started off on an inclined hill under the mentioned condition but this is not a total surprise to me at all to any RWD car, I supposed.

I got the BMW winter wheels and tire package two weeks ago. Best money I have spent on this car to date for mods. I have no issues.
There was an issue getting the package from BMW due to part delays. This far into the season your dealer may be out of stock. This may be why he is telling you there are no options. If you can't get them now pick them up in the summer. Night and day. |

try modifying a 550i xdrive
I have owned a 2000 M5 and a 2008 M3 and did fine in heavy snow of Wisconsin as long as I switched to set of winter wheels with Dunlop Wintersports. I just sold my M3 and bought a 550i x-drive M sport and added the Dinan suspension, the S2 performance chip, and the exhaust system. It doesn't have the double clutch transmission but it is pretty close to an AWD M5 and so far it's been totally awesome in the snow with the stock all season run flats.
