M5 gone

So unfortunately after only a year I've had to move on from the M5! Was driving down the motorway and a nail flew up and went into the oil cooler. It dumped all the oil (well there was 1/2L left if you want to be picky) and bmw estimates a replacement engine would be £28k so the insurance company wrote it off as total loss!

Shame as it was a great car and never let me down and had just had a service too

Thankfully I had invoice protection so got back what I paid for the car in full! And just picked up a 2018 M3 competition pack in santorini blue which was second hand but only had 600 miles on it!

And here is the replacement! Ironically the road which I was driving down at the time the nail hit is called the M3 😂

That sucks! I'm glad you were ok and that you were able to get back what you paid for the car. Nice M3 too!

Thanks mate. Yeah came up saying oil low, then drive train malfunction then I pull over to stop and it started to judder! Then as I pulled up the engine died! All in the space of 30 seconds.

Loving the M3 so far and haven't driven it much. Not as refined as the m5 and the dash and things feel a bit basic in comparison but completely different animal! Can put your foot down at low speeds without the traction controls going nuts!! What's that about 🤣

Usually associate a nail like that going into a tyre not an oil rad and terminating an engine but glad its ended on a positive note for you and you'll continue burning up those fine driving roads round your way.

Glad it worked out for you.

£28K to repair / replace the M5 engine - i guess it would have been a borderline right off...? how old was the car & mileage?

Yeah they did. They valued it at £28,800. it was a 63 plate (so LCI) with only 42k on the clock

If you dont mind me asking, did you get into a tussle between warranty company and insurance company, in that how did the insurance company get involved since it wasnt an accident, did they willingly cover it as I would imagine they may have argued it was a mechanical failure and you were on your own to pick up with the warranty instead of insurance.

Just good to know how that happened just in case similar happened to anyone else.

No problems what so ever! used BMW assist to pick it up and they dropped off a shiny 320i for me to use. I initially though it was mechanical but then when BMW looked into it they found the nail. So I then notified the insurance company to get the claim started and no quibble from either side! took about 2 weeks to sort from accident to agreed settlement and then a just under a week for the cheque to clear. slight delay in that the insurance company wanted the old oil cooler put back on before they picked it up as BMW fitted a new one as part of their diagnostics (which on first start concluded the engine was well f##ked big time), so instead of picking it up on the Monday it was collected on the Friday! but such is life.

Had to claim on my own insurance though as there were no other cars involved but I have protected no claims, and its just classed as a collision! most importantly I had GAP cover as well so got back what I paid for the car! so when buying a car £400 for Gap cover is well worth it!

This just terrified me!

Scariest thing I've seen this night & it's Halloween

Do you think if you pulled over immediately after getting the "low oil" sign, ignition off, opened your trunk, poured a quart in(is it possible/bad in a hot engine?), and sat there that the engine could've survived? I'd assume the engine quits oil circulation when turned off

Well the whole thing happened in about 30 seconds! The moment the low oil popped up I left off the gas and was just coasting, thinking what the hell is going on it was just serviced how can it need oil already! then thought should I come off this exit or go on to the next services! then I pulled over and stopped and then engine died when I came to a halt.

So not sure if I could have saved it! didn't know that was the problem! when I stopped I figured maybe the sump plug had come loose (happened to a friend on his 320d that was serviced at the same dealer once).

I think the odds of this happening ever again to anyone are one in a million! as how the nail got through the grill i'll never know! so I wouldn't worry too much
