Any experience with Jeeps?
Hi all,
I am interested in potentially purchasing a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Altitude... this is the 4x2 V6 model... they have quite the deals and offers on them right now. Does anyone have experience with these vehicles? I know the reliability was shoddy in the early current gen years but I think by 2016 and 2017 most of that has been worked out. Any experience with them? |

Inline six motor was legendary. I had a 2001 Cherokee with 352,000 miles that was stolen and destroyed by a druggie. I’d still have it if that didn’t happen. I can’t speak to the newer v6 version. That made me start looking at BMWs because of their use of inline sixes too.

The 4.0 liter inline-six is an excellent engine. Even more fun when stroked to a 4.6L. The 4.0 in my 2000 XJ has 175k miles. My father has a 2013 Grand Cherokee with the 5.7L V8. It is approaching 100k miles, and has been his favorite vehicle so far. His previous vehicle was a 2009 Benz GL450. The Grand Cherokee is refined yet very rugged. He has not had any problems with it besides a water pump which was covered under warranty early on. The newer Grand Cherokees have the 3.6L Pentastar V6. The early ones (2011-2012) had some issues with cylinder heads cracking, but the newer ones have been updated. They get decent mpg for the power they have.

I've shopped and researched them extensively. Personally I would try and stay away from the quadra lift suspension unless you feel you absolutely need it.
If you know you won't own the car out of its bumber to bumper warranty then it shouldn't be a concern though.

ConsumerReports said about the 2017, high customer satisfaction / predicted reliability low.
Refinement and capability of expensive German competitors, but with a lower price. |

I saw the consumer reports rating and only saw a few marks, mainly on electronics... what most people don't know is that this vehicle rides on a Benz W166 rear wheel drive platform. It makes it really enjoyable to drive.

Why 2WD? Jeeps are legendary or at least known for their 4x4 systems. I had an old CJ7 4x4 with in line 6. A great little vehicle in the snow and off road until T-Boned by a snowplow.

On our third Grand Cherokee and finally got my first Wrangler last year. Never had any problems with any of them. The JK is my daily.

I have a 2014 JGC Overland Hemi and I love it. It was my wife's car for three years but I took it over about 9 months ago. I also just added the Corsa exhaust, SRT rear sway bar, and MOPAR CAI and man oh man did this thing come to life. We've collectively put 31k on the car and the only issue we've had was the water pump which was replaced under warranty (they extended coverage of the part to 100k as it's a known issue). Other than that it's been trouble free. Really great vehicle and one that FCA absolutely HAD to get right to save the company. They nailed it!

I can only speak for the V8 but my transmission (8spd) is buttery smooth.

My wife drives a JGC Summit with the Hemi motor. Zero complaints. Great riding car, very smooth, plenty of power, tows a 3500 lb boat like it isnt there. Zero issues in a year of ownership and 25 thousand miles. the JGC is the thing Jeep does best.
RE the 4.0 liter bulletproof motor of yesteryear - it is long gone. Don't buy the current V6 thinking that is the motor you are getting. The Hemi motor is ubiquitous across the Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep lineup, and it is pretty well bulletproof.

Right, I said that I can only speak for the V8. I know it's a different transmission.
