new (to me) M5, need to top off oil, what to use?

Heyo,

Oil level warning came on. When the dealer changed it they put in either Mobil 1 or Castrol. Am I good to just buy a quart of Castrol Edge 0W-30 (or 0W-40) and top it off, regardless of which of those two it is?

Hello, yeah you can put in either one really. I would recommend knowing exactly what oil they use OR do the oil change yourself and buy some extra for top-offs. I personally use liquid moli 5w-40.

I usually buy a couple extra liters of the oil i used to change the oil (use BMW 5w-30) but i once topped off using Mobil 1 5w-30 because i wasn't going to be home for a few days and it did the trick, no issues.

thanks. this was the dealer I bought the car from and they're 3 hours away, so doubt they'll ever do it again. I will probably do the actual oil changes myself going forward. It's been about 2.3K miles since it was changed, I'll likely change it all out at ~5K.

When I talked to the dealer on the phone just now they said most likely it was mobil 1 they put in it, so I'm just going to grab a quart of mobil 1 0W-40, given that's what's LL01.

They likely didn't take the time to drain all the oil correctly, nor the time to fill it correctly. There is a big oil cooler on the front of the engine, right where the grill takes a big gulp for fresh air. For the price and availability, you likely will not go wrong with the M1 0w-40 Euro Formula. I think the key to protecting the bearings is in the selection of a good full synthetic 40w viscosity. (Find the one with the lowest Noack that you can.)
