F10 M5 whirring noise
Hi all,
Just purchased a 2012 M5.51K miles from new. Full BMW service history and for what it's worth passes a AA 128 point inspection (only driven to 35mph). My excitement has now turned to worry... as I have discovered a whirring noise. My gut tells me it's the diff... It is far more noticeable at 70mph, than 20mph, is progressively louder as speed increases. It's booked in with BMW tomorrow for a test drive, but any ideas? It is only there under load (acceleration), i can make it disappear at some rpm's, for example maintaining 50 mph and going up and down the gearbox, some gears it disappears (rpm). It is not there when freewheeling in neutral. Car drives, goes and stops as it should, just this drone.... I initially thought it was active sound as I have never experienced this before, but if it is... BMW have made the car sound horrid. Sound stays the same in any m mode. Any thoughts? Many thanks. Mine was making the noise you described, and it ended up being I had a rear differential leak. Once the rear diff seal and fluid was replaced, the noise disappeared. I asked the tech if there was any indication of wear in the gears from low fluid, and he said no. Hopefully yours is a very simple fix as mine was.
For what it’s worth, BMW 120+ point inspection is hit or miss depending on the dealership. They’ll sell you a tuned car that was beat up to make money if they can get away with it. |

Sounds like you are describing the DCT gearbox. It has a whine not dissimilar to a straight-cut gear gearbox from a racing car. Had the same with my E91 M3. Personally, I love it, as it serves as a reminder that you aren’t driving a poxy 520d, you’re driving a brute.

OP - can you unplug the active sound module to rule that out? Its a 5-minute process described in one of the DIY posts here: http://f10.m5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=983411. Post # 63 states to remove 3 fasteners rather than all of them - the 3 are all on the left side of the trunk, with 1 of the 3 just underneath the lid opening - so you don't have to remove all fasteners and panels.
For the DCT whine, on my 2013 it was a lot more prominent than my 2015. Used to hear it daily, and now I can't say when the last time I've heard it was.

Thanks for the comments guys...
I will disable the active noise thingy... This is a drone/whirring, a dull noise... almost like a square tyre, but goes when there is no load on the engine... E.G. neutral or off the gas... |
