Engine Temp High?
So this has happened a few times. It seems to be an intermittent fault. Had the codes pulled and the only temp related code was ECU fan not working. Anyone else had this happen? Oil temp was in the mid range when this happened. Seems like the AUX fan isn’t kicking on because when I parked after it wasn’t running like it normally does after shut down. Car is a 2014 with 40k on the clock. Engine has 3000 miles it was changed under warrenty before I got it. Thanks!

Auxiliary Fan
G’day
Our “Hot Vee” Engine design generates a lot of heat and you will cause untold damage to your engine “overtemping” without the Auxiliary Fan not working properly. Bmw designed this system to keep the under bonnet temps within reason after shutdown. Get it checked out sooner then later otherwise it will cost more in engine damage due “heat stress”. I would check the codes again after a few days and see what comes back. If you have diagnostic software, you can probably activate the aux fan manually and at each speed. If the problem is intermittent like you say, then this test won't tell you much if everything is working.
Unlike most other BMW's, our DME's are mounted "externally" and as such, they don't have their own specific cooling fans like other cars do inside of a box. I also mirror the sentiment above. Don't let this go for too long as the electric fan combines with the electric water pump in the turbo cooling circuit to keep everything from heat soaking. You could develop turbo issues over time. That said, you would probably have to run the engine hot many times over to start causing issues like coked up oil lines, etc. |
