Mission Performance: New style of remote coding and diagnostic

Remote coding has been offered by many vendors for a while now, though most are still using the old, obsolete technology. Until now, customers had to download/install a 1GB+ software package and allow remote desktop control access to your computer.
Well now this is about to change. We are in process of rolling out our custom remote coding, factory update, performance flash and complete vehicle error diagnostic. All of this will be done using a simple cable package (that you can rent from us) as well as a 5mb software package. All you need is a laptop with stable internet connection as well as one USB port. A customer will start a program, click connect and that's it. Sit back and relax while we do the work on our end, without compromising your computer's safety by using a remote desktop applications.

Coding package is self explanatory. The customer downloads and fills out the coding checklist PDF, uploaded it at the time of purchase. We remotely connect to your car and perform all of the coding.

Diagnostic package will allow us to run a full vehicle diagnostic using BMW factory software and send you a full diagnostic report. This will include error code/airbag/adaptation reset.

Factory update package allows us to perform full BMW factory update on your vehicle. Most updates are quick and can be performed over personal hot-spot. Bigger updates such as navigation NBT/CIC require a steady high-speed internet connection.

Performance re-flash package allows us to flash your vehicle remotely. This is designed for our returning customers that have purchased M-Boot option and would like to update to higher performance stage of the reflash.

I don't know about the statement of compromising computer safety using a remote desktop program being completely true. From what you're describing, you're just opening a network port to proxy through on the customer's computer to the vehicle, which is some cases can be more dangerous than something like TeamViewer. Especially if you're exposing the vehicle's 6801 port on the ZGW to the internet because anything can access at that point.

Of course, unless you're building a true encrypted VPN tunnel via your program.

Also it's not a very good idea to try and transmit flash data directly over the internet, which is one reason why having the flash data locally is preferred. A connection failure mid-flash can render a control unit completely inoperable on a customer's vehicle. I'd hope in those rare cases you'd fix/replace the dead module. Even BMW in the dealership service shops require a hard connection to the vehicle for flashing, because even WiFi can be unreliable for such a sensitive operation.

Not trying to rain on a parade or hate, but there are very real risks that people should be aware of when undertaking some of these things.

We do not open ports or change routing of ports in any way on the customer's end. Our solution works even on hotspot network, on which its difficult to forward ports.

This is actually not true. It is virtually impossible to damage any module to the point of no return, as long as you know what you are doing during recovery. Even during boot-loader update, (the most critical part) we can recover and restore any module. We have performed quite few of these flashes on test vehicles already, purposely killing network during the most critical stages and recovery was easy.

At our shop we have performed many full vehicle updates, and never used hard-wired connection. There is no issues of using wifi/internet. Do not get me wrong, hard-wired as "better" setup for flashing, though wifi is more then sufficient.

This is just the announcement of the system we are implementing. Full list of coding options as well as finished forms will be finalized very soon.
