Driving quickly without being anti-social
We all bought an M5 partly because of its performance. If you don't like driving quickly, the M5 would be a very strange choice. However much we may like driving quickly, other people often do not like it.
For example, I have recently been flashed several times by drivers I've just overtaken in situations where it was unquestionably a safe place to overtake. If I am a few cars lengths behind a car doing 40 in a 60 and I put my foot down, I am already going very quickly before I draw level. There are some other situations where going really quickly is definitely out of order. If I am on a 60 mile an hour road going quickly, oncoming drivers do genuinely have more reason to be concerned than if I were doing 40. There are also clearly law enforcement issues to take into consideration as well. I'm curious to know what other people's views are on this. How do you avoid (if you do) being "another tosser in a BMW" but still enjoy your car's abilities? |

I open the exhaust flaps to make sure I sound as fast as I look
Who cares what people think I have normally disappeared anyway by the time they realise what I have done |

Same here I've been beeped by snails in Micras when I zip past them who think moving from the lights at a snails pace is normal.
A trick to prevent annoying bikers moving in front of you at the lights is to stay far too the right near the island so they can't squeeze in and you can get away cleanly. |

No see your getting modern driving all wrong!
You should dither about all lanes very slowly. You should sit in middle or outside lane max 50 mph. You should driver across the lines then get upside when I pass you because you have narrowed the gap. Oh when you drive a mobility Astra you should drive like a stolen Escort Rs Turbo. I think this will perhaps resonate with some!!! |

In my F10 M5C I used to frequently get flashed on a 60mph road when overtaking numpties doing 40.
And this still happens now I'm driving a 116i. Go figure... |

Too many "road captains" on the road, think that they aren't allowed to be overtaken.
Look at our motorways, how many people in the middle or outside lane doing 55/60mph for miles on end. Its a danger to other road users, because they force people to overtake or indeed undertake. I generally drive pretty quick, 70(ish) where the speed limit allows. So I just overtake/undertake when I see it safe todo so, which when you have 600bhp behind you means pretty much any gap is an overtake opportunity!

Worse are the 55mph plodders who not only force heavy vehicles to overtake in the middle lane but those plodders don't seem to check mirrors before pulling out nor do they pass quickly. They cause phantom tailbacks completely oblivious to their stupidity. Should be minimum *entry* speeds for middle lane and higher again for fast lane.

(hi new joiner! Used to follow pistonheads but it wasn't M5 specific enough)
I don't really enjoy being the bad guy in a fast-looking BMW but where I live there are a lot of national speed limit roads that people do an indicated 40, sometimes down to 25 on corners. That's really slow and it creates little convoys. The M5 should be a particularly safe car to overtake with, so if people flash I suspect the things they don't like are: 1. Halo lights in the rear view mirror. 2. BMW badges 3. As you say, we overtake very fast, ironically they probably don't like that. Would they prefer us to gently cruise alongside for a short while? I'm not sure there is any pleasing those types of people. |

Plot twist, sometimes being antisocial without driving quickly is nice. I like to make a lot of noise sometimes. Although I now have resonator delete and back box delete I'm still unsure if its loud enough.

Drove it like I stole it today and had a great time, I am sure some drivers in half decent cars appreciated it, much as I would if a Ferrari or Lamborghini drove their car hard.
Didn’t get flashed but used a fair bit of fuel, you know you have had fun when you get pumped on adrenaline just by driving |

Had some kids in 2 focus STs racing around the other nice, so I joined in and left them in my wake...
They kept coming along side and telling me to nail it off, they loved it and kept flashing me and giving the thumbs up after. The joys of living in Essex.
