Check engine light - fuel grade change

Check engine/emission light came on yesterday. I always use 94 oct fuel (Petro Canada), but had to fill up yesterday with 91 octane (Esso), tank was empty (fuel reserve light, 50km to empty). Light came on after the second time I started the car after fueling up with 91 oct.

Could the change in fuel grade cause this light to come on?

Two other potential issues causing this:

Last week I had the add 1 litre of oil notification come up. I added 1 litre right away and warning went away.
Changed the brake fluid in July, notification said was due in June. Dealer forgot to reset notification so it still says overdue even though the brake fluid has been changed. Need to get back to dealer for them to reset soon..

Don't think those two issues are causing the check engine light to come on but I'm just putting it out there..

Car is 2013 with 19,000 kms on it.

Thanks.

Rather than guess, you should get the codes read out. Then report back here with what they are. You may have a misfire that the low octane fuel is causing. Not the fuel itself, but potentially a bad spark plug showing itself now with different fuel. Just a thought.

Ok thanks. Anyway to easily get those codes without going to the dealership?

Yes, go to the part store and buy an OBD II code reader. It would actually be cheaper than having a diagnostic done at the dealer.

I see that you are in Canada but in the U.S. all of our major parts stores will read OBD II codes free of charge without even purchasing anything. Not sure what your exact options are up there but I hope this helps.

Any ODB2 reader should show you the bare minimum codes. Where in Ontario are you? I live 20 minutes from the border at Niagara Falls.

Thanks I will get one, it will be worth it's price since I'll be able to use it for any possible future notifications..

Got it thanks. I'm in Ottawa so quite far from you..

I'll look for a reader either tomorrow if part stores are open or on Monday.

Ah yeah, quite far! I figured if you were in the GTA you could drive down to the US and I could scan it for you.

Report back once you've had a chance to scan it.

Good luck

Thanks for the offer regardless!

Did some research last night on OBD2 scanners. Decided to go with one with good reviews and middle price point - the BlueDriver Bluetooth professional OBDII scan tool for iPhone..

Amazon Prime free one day shipping - should come in later today. Will post results once available.

Code is P0161 - O2 sensor heater circuit bank 2 sensor 2.

Does anything need to be changed?

I also ran mode 6, freeze frame, and full scan reports..

Found this thread regarding the sensor code.. maybe bad fuel when I filled up with 91oct? Not sure if I should change sensor or wait until I fill up with 94 oct again. Should I clear the code when I do fill up and see if it comes back? Add any fuel treatment??

Check Engine Light: Code P0141 https://f10.m5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1383729

Edit: more info added

Yes Bad fuel can throw this code. I had this once on my F10 M5 and once on my E60 M5. Both times just used a Techron fuel system treatment bottle and fueled up with fresh new fuel and all was fine.

So you recommend I use remaining fuel in tank, then fill up with my usual 94oct and add fuel treatment at that time? Or put fuel treatment in current tank (still almost full)? Do I clear the code then (after fill up) or just see if it goes away by itself? Thanks

Add fuel treatment to the current tank. Take a long drive to burn that fuel. Then fill up at your usual "good" fuel place and add another bottle and you should be fine.

You can clear code right now. Then take your drive. It might come back on again depending how bad that gas was.

I'm going to try that, thanks.

So no need to clear the check engine light, it should go away by itself?

When I did mine, I cleared it with code reader. Then after my drive I checked to see if code was still triggering before the light came back on (Usually 3 times makes light come on) But the code never came back.

Same happened to me, switched to Momentum 99 from Shell v p and light coming on for two short periods then went back to Shell and it went away permanently. Can only think that Momentum 99 (which is normal uld 95 with 5% methane added to bring it to 99) hasn't got the cleaning and lube properties of Shell v-power.

OP - sounds like it will work out just fine for you! You get to learn about the code diagnostic process and added to your abilities with the new scanner.

I agree with others that you should be fine to clear the code and replace the fuel. Should be good to go.
