Through the years car manufacturers and other entities have come to compete in Formula 1. Some produced remarkable winners (BRM, Lotus,Tyrell, Matra, Brabham (in 2 different eras), Williams, Benetton, Renault, RedBull, MB, Ferrari). Thank goodness they were accepted and allowed to compete. Some entities were (on paper) expected to come in and dominate...but failed (Cooper, Porsche,Toyota, Honda, Stewart /Ford/Jaguar). In some instances it showed how money alone doesn't guarantee success. There were also individuals who wanted to field their own cars (Surtees, Jordan, Sauber, Minardi). While hopelessly outclassed, they provided "seats" for future greats to enter the sport (Alonso, Hill, Schumacher, Massa, Pace). Eventually, the expense of failure pushed them out (as it still does in all other motor sports).
But not Formula 1. It is now a cloistered package designed by a media conglomerate that feels the product is sustainable by remaining inbred...they're convinced they can "create" fans that will follow this scenario without end and "grow" the sport simply by having more races. It and the inflated values of the un-competitive teams is a bubble. |

Qualifying and racetimes are much closer now than the era you're talking about. You can compare the numbers, it's as simple as that. And, that big difference in performance back then didn't made the sport safer, that's for sure. Same goes for a large number of cars on the track. That there are too many old timers and too little newcomers in the racing seats...absolutely. However, somehow teams like williams cling to underperformers like Logan Sargeant, and when Nyck de Vries is ditched halfway during the year because of underwhelming performance everyone yells shame... But basically you're saying that long stayers like alonso and hamilton have to move? Still I don't really see how adding Andretti to the grid is going to change all this... Who says they're gonna do things differently?

Jolyon Palmer's rating of the teams after the testing days:
Interestingly he rates McLaren above Mercedes. That Haas was last and RB first is pretty much a given.

Why MAX would never go to Merc, doesn't take much to think why not (Silverstone and A Dhabi '21) and at the end Marko explains about wolff's close relationship with LEW is so close a sheet of paper... I'll let you read
