F1 2024: Australian GP - Melbourne (Mar 24)

F1 2024: Australian GP - Melbourne (Mar 24)

Schedule:
https://www.formula1.com/en/racing/2024/Australia.html

Albert Park Circuit

Quote:
Melbourne
When was the track built?

The deal to host Formula 1 in Melbourne was done in 1993, with the decision taken to create a circuit using a mixture of the existing roads around the city’s Albert Park – mainly Aughtie Drive and Lakeside Drive if you fancy driving it yourself – with a little detour through the Lakeside Stadium’s car park.
When was its first Grand Prix?

Just four months after Adelaide held its last Australian Grand Prix at the end of 1995, the Formula 1 teams were back in Australia for Melbourne's first Grand Prix at the start of 1996. That race is most often remembered for Martin Brundle’s infamous Jordan crash at Turn 3 after he launched himself off the back of Johnny Herbert’s Sauber.
What’s the circuit like?

As a temporary facility, Albert Park can be quite bumpy - though resurfacing for 2022 will no doubt improve matters - while the circuit at the start of the weekend is often slippery, rubbering in as the sessions progress. It’s also a circuit that requires a well-sorted chassis, with several spots on the track where the drivers require a reactive front end to allow them to chuck it into a corner. Melbourne is also one of the faster tracks on the calendar, with Lewis Hamilton’s 2019 pole lap set at an average of over 235km/h.
Why go?

Often found on lists of the world’s best cities, Melbourne is a blast all year round – and it only gets better when Formula 1 rolls into town. There are bars and restaurants aplenty, you’re right by the beach, while the race’s appearance at the start of Australia’s autumn means the temperatures should be peachy.
Where is the best place to watch?

If you want to get in a grandstand, opt for either the Waite stand overlooking Turn 10, or the Brabham Grandstand on the outside of Turn 2 to watch cars jostling for position through the first chicane. Alternatively, there are some nice general admission spots on the far side of the lake – go for either between Turns 8-9 or 9-10 if you fancy some F1 picnic feels.

So what is your prediction?
I think this track will be a challenge for team MERC, quite a few high speed corners where last GP in Jeddah, the Mercs struggled with the high speed corners.

My prediction:

1. VER
2. LEC
3. PER
4. NOR
5. SAE
6. PIA
7. ALO
8. HAM
9. RUS
10. STR

But looking at how it went last year, a few of these drivers will probably get a DNF due to crashes....

Maybe Chas could outfox Checo here if no Ferrari-things but with CH's iron grip getting stronger on things with the latest news it'll probably be another 1-2 as the MK team gets less doubtful with this in mind.
1-2 for MAX then SER.
3 onwards are
LEC, SAI, PIA (home GP) NOR,HAM and RUS,ALO,STR.

Ollie's a millionaire! 18 YO Bearman from Essex has boosted his piggy bank to over a million with that 7th place for Ferrari and mum is proud
It didn't take long for him to find a glam girlfriend and of course being an Essex man he drives a BMW.

Whatever happens the rest of this season, his drive will probably be the highlight of the year for me. What a cool moment.

As for his association with a TT `er ...

That moment was spellbinding for me too and shows how competitive they are in F2 now for Ollie to put that show on.

K-Mag drove a cunning race, but totally within the bounds of the present rules which I'm all for revising, which achieved the team goal.

My thought is that once a car reaches so many penalties, say 10 seconds, they get black flagged.

I am expecting to see a better performance from McLaren at the Australian GP. They should provide really tough competition to Ferrari behind Max and Checo.

Johnny Herbert has warned others especially Ferrari that MAX has at least two tenths in reserve if not more. With Ferrari piling on upgrades he still thinks RBR will have it covered, in other words a MAX massacre and tough s#it for the rest.

Why do you think Sainz turned up in the Ferrari pit recovering from his stomach operation..
No prizes for guessing he is worried about his position with Ollie's stonking drive grabbing a fistful of points in Jeddah; he was also giving Bearman advice over the radio... and LEW will be 40 YO when he takes over from Sainz there.
