Bypass : DINAN1 : DINAN2 : Stock : TuningTechFS (only Stage 1 +116 HP +142 FT-LBS)

Edit: Go to post #12 for dyno results (stock M5 transmission would not withstand Stage 2 power increase, went only Stage 1)

After shopping for quite some time, I made the decision to move beyond the currently installed DINAN piggy-back. I am scheduled to have baseline dynos and then a Stage 2, 93 octane tune installed by Tuning Tech FS Monday, June 22, 2020. These are the other BMW platforms they support.

I've heard great things about Frank Smith's shop. He has a vast amount of experience with the F10 M5 platform, many other platforms, and provides stellar post installation support.

I will document my experience with Tuning Tech FS (http://tuningtechfs.com/) and report how everything goes. The following is what I am hoping to have done to document the performance and characteristics of each state of tune:

For fun, post how you expect the vehicle will dyno.
EXAMPLE
Dyno 1-2 Avg: Stock = xxx HP xxx FT-LBS
Dyno 3-4 Avg: DINAN STAGE 1 = xxx HP xxx FT-LBS
Dyno 5-6 Avg: DINAN STAGE 2 = xxx HP xxx FT-LBS
Dyno 7-8 Avg: Tuning Tech FS Stage 2 = xxx HP xxx FT-LBS

Can't wait! Thank you for taking the time to document this. I personally am on Stg 1 Dinan and considered staying Dinan and going stg2. (Is it just a s/w upgrade that you load via bluetooth w/ the app?). Lately though, I've been considering other options such as DME and BPM, when I go stg 2.

Looking fwd to your results.

94jedi: Hoping this reply answers your question regarding use of my DINAN hardware and software package:
  1. Engine OFF with accessory power ON
  2. Bluetooth from your device (phone or tablet) paired with DINAN hardware installed in vehicle
  3. Install and use DINAN app
  4. Enter password for the specific DINAN hardware
  5. Select desired tune (Bypass or Stage 1 or Stage 2)

yep, answers the question for me. I guess I have to buy the stg 2 though. Hardware seems to be the same.

about 100 whp and 135 wtq sounds about right when going from stock to Stg 2. I do however think the Dinan steps should be worth a bit more.

Btw, I'm looking more at the incremental improvements (mods) vs the actual numbers, which are more dependent on the dyno itself.

You are an intelligent individual who understands a dyno is a wonderful tool to determine where you start and where you end up!

DELAYED and it is my fault!

After arriving, Frank Smith asked me a few questions. With a very polite tone and smile, Frank stated the vehicle needs plugs that are two steps cooler. After looking at their website for a Stage 2 install more closely, this was an oversight by me and my fault. He recommends NGK 97506 plugs gapped to 0.022” every 10k miles.

I plan to purchase plugs from NAPA $19 or order from FCP EURO $13 https://www.fcpeuro.com.
Edit: NAPA gave a nice discount and I will pick them up later today for <$120

He said he’d help me change the plugs this Saturday, after the engine cooled for 3-4 hrs. Then, if the dyno was available, we’d do baseline pulls, tune it, and then do a few more pulls to verify all was running as it should at Stage 2.

I asked him the typical HP and TRQ numbers to expect and my guesses will likely be wrong. He said he has Stage 2 cars 750+ HP at the wheels, but only if they have supporting mods...(Clutches, Catless Downpipes, Transmission Coolers, Differential Upgrades, Half Shafts etc). To keep my vehicle from tearing itself apart, he expects to de-tune my M5 with numbers at or below 610-620 HP at the wheels. He said it will simply depend how my vehicle “accepts” the power.

BTW, his shop was immaculate with 1 F10 M5 besides mine, 1 M4, 3 M3s and 1 Porsche.

Spark Plugs Installed and Ready for Dyno Tomorrow!

I installed new plugs last night. With the help of this forum and Tuning Tech FS, I am now error free. I had many of error codes after installing the new plugs and they were CAUSED BY A MOTH! Click here to see how and why.

Here’s how things turned out, Stock vs. Stage 1 (+116 HP AND +142 FT-LBS )

All dyno pulls were in fourth gear so the RPM redline and power are reached prior to reaching the stock maximum speed limiter. Because of this, all measurements are apples to apples but will be a bit low. Fifth gear is 1:1, but again the vehicle would not achieve full power because the car would never reach maximum RPM redline while running in DINAN Bypass Mode, DINAN Stages 1 & 2, and Stock.
  • View videos in HD (1080p) to see chart values and I apologize for my horrible video skills
  • Here's a video of the vehicle being loaded on the Dynocom Dyno (video)

DINAN Harness
Bypass Mode* 447 HP 372 FT-LBS
Bypass Mode Not Run
DINAN Stage 1 477 HP 401 FT-LBS video
DINAN Stage 1 477 HP 387 FT-LBS video
DINAN Stage 2 480 HP 389 FT-LBS video
DINAN Stage 2 482 HP 391 FT-LBS video

DINAN Harness Removed
Stock Tune* 499 468 FT-LBS
Stock Tune* 512 HP 465 FT-LBS video
Stock Tune* 505 HP 451 FT-LBS

TuningTech Stage 1 629 HP 615 FT-LBS
TuningTech Stage 1 613 HP 590 FT-LBS video

STOCK vs. STAGE 1 ADDED AN AVERAGE OF 116 HP and 142 FT-LBS. The two last two pulls with the Tuning Tech FS Stage 1 tune were run immediately back-to-back to make sure the tune safely dialed-back power keeping safe the stock clutches, turbos and catalytic converters.

*The deltas of these numbers are eye opening to say the least. I expected the DINAN Bypass Mode would be equal to the Stock Tune. Frank Smith knows Steve Dinan and respects his work and products. He said very few of his products have this type of an outcome and that most are GREAT! Essentially, certain products (not just DINAN) do not mesh well with certain BMW DMEs due to speed of the master (US passenger side) and slave (US driver side) DMEs. Frank has seen this issue before and that's why he suggested we do the extra pulls with the harness removed and running the stock tune before loading his tune. He is honest and does not want to falsely indicate a huge delta from the DINAN Bypass Mode vs. his Stage 1 tune. He wants to show a true Stock Tune vs. Tuning Tech Stage 1 tune. I give Frank a lot of credit for doing this in an industry that is not always honest and forthcoming.

He reduced the spikes of torque in lower gears to make it more manageable to drive. His shop had their own F10 M5 for a while and was used to determine safe driving limits for the F10 platform. His family loved the car until he installed downpipes without cats. The smell and mess of black on the back of his white car drove him crazy. He later installed high flowing sport cats and all was good again.

Their M5 vehicle ran at MPAC Pocono and I believe he said back it was back in 2016. I was there last summer and it was just a blast to watch. I’ll run my car there some day.

I reviewed everything and yes, unfortunately, on my car, once the DINAN harness was removed, the vehicle became more powerful than any of the DINAN modes/stages.

Umm I'm confused with those numbers for stage two. When I dynoed it was like 600whp/670tq. I was in 5th gear as BPM removed the 155 limiter

Went with Stage I vs. Stage II to save OEM clutches

Ickdeep: I appreciate your post and apologize for the confusion.

My previous posts mentioned going to a Stage 2 tune. And, it was my intention to have Frank at Tuning Tech FS install his Stage 2 tune. But we discussed the longevity of the stock clutches, catalytic converters and turbos. I could have Stage 2 installed but I’d need to be EXTREMELY careful. Frank said his Stage 2 torque would DESTROY the stock clutches! He has had a lot of experience and showed me actual clutches from a customer who insisted they would drive modestly until they upgraded the clutches.

Then he walked me out to his shop and he let me see and hold a former customer’s clutches. The clutches were warped and discolored. Right then I asked him to install only the Stage 1 tune instead of Stage 2.

As mentioned earlier, the most important numbers are the delta—where I began and where I ended up. These numbers are just a reference point and can always be disputed.

Nice numbers and interesting result w/ the Dinan. When I go into bypass, the car feels much slower. On Stg 1 Dinan, it feels stronger for sure.

1320racer how hard was it to remove the dinan harness and module?

Removing DINAN harness before dyno tune

94jedi: I’m glad to know your DINAN piggy-back is working well. I really could not even discern the 30ish' wheel horse power difference mine made. I have made a good number of 1/4 mile passes and it made no clear difference with my vehicle there either. Again, I am happy yours is actually working!

Removing the harness is not difficult. For me it was more of the fear of the unknown since I did not install the harness and had no instructions. From start to finish it took around 15 minutes. It would have been easier if the engine bay was cool. Unfortunately, my motor was screaming hot after all the setup dyno runs and baseline pulls.

Here are suggested steps if you are going to remove the harness.
  1. Remove negative battery cable in trunk (10mm socket)
  2. Open hood and remove engine cover
  3. Remove DINAN Negative (near air filter) and Positive (under red plastic cover) power cables located on the US passenger side using a torx bit (T-50 torx)
  4. Remove DINAN harness at each DME:
US passenger side -- Remove DME cables starting from firewall moving towards the front of vehicle
US driver side -- Remove DME cables starting from front of vehicle moving towards the firewall. I had to pull the driver's DME from the mounting tower to provide sufficient room to detach and remove the cables
  5. Completely disconnect and remove DINAN piggy-back cables; you may need a pair of wire cutters to cut wire ties
(1 gnd, 1 pwr, 6 cables connected to each DME = 14 cables)
  6. Reinstall all OEM connections to both DME's in the opposite order they were removed
  7. The DINAN control module was held in place by Velcro in the engine bay. I simply removed it and pealed off the Velcro
  8. Reinstall negative battery cable in trunk (10mm socket)

Nice numbers for stage 1. Do you have, and are you willing, to post a pic of your dyno sheet reflecting the tuning tech runs? I am wanting to see the shape of the torque and power curves

I did a horrible job taking videos and pics but will provide what I have. Also the DYNOCOM display tools are not great at indicating multiple runs within a single picture.

Liking Stage 1 Tune : Service Intervals : Options

I've been driving with a Stage 1 tune from Tuning Tech FS for 11 days and I really enjoy the usable power. The vehicle is now extremely responsive at half throttle and beyond, yet feels completely stock when not pushing it.

Frank suggested reducing the powertrain's service intervals essentially in half and I expect to change the rear differential fluid soon to keep the vehicle happy.

Edit: I neglected to included this information earlier and options in bold were selected by me.
Key Features
Recalibrated settings for a smoother and more responsive part throttle transition
Recalibrated settings for a smoother and more responsive power delivery
Modified Vanos camshaft remapping
Available "Burble" Maps
Free tech support and assistance
Top speed limiter

Available Options
Cold Start Delete
Stage 1 or Stage 2 maps for 91-93 octane
Off Road Only Downpipe Map
Burble Option
Tuner flag removal
