Coolant leak / dealer issue question
Hello all,
Had the coolant line/hose recall done in 2015 on my 2013 M5. Only put about 18k miles on it since, had some coolant start leaking (nothing major but not taking any chances) on to the top of the engine. So anyways I have an extended warranty on it through a 3rd party, but why would they want to charge me another 2k for the lines and hoses? They were already replaced under recall , but it's a known issue, and their original fix, did not fix the damn issue. I don't understand their logic. There has to be multiple that have gone through this, what did you end up doing?

Honestly I'm thinking about doing that. It's not really about the money, I've read they've quoted 3k for it.. it's the principle. The car was designed with a fault, we literally have to pay for it. If they don't accept my 3rd party bumper to bumper warranty, I'll just replace it myself. Got a nice drive upstate next week, just need it ready by then

If you're handy with a utility knife, side cutters and buy regular clamps, you can do this job yourself for under $100. ECStuning sells the kit which includes the 4 new hoses and 8 new clamps. I don't have the special tool for the clamps but I do have "straight on"/90 degree wire cutters and they work perfect for clamping down the one time use clamps. If you can't figure this part out, just buy regular worm clamps. There is no need to bleed the system. Simply top up your turbo cooling circuit (the cap over on the side of the engine which doesn't have a defined reservoir).

I had them replace the hoses for me, and top off coolant and call it a day, $600 and change. I know I could have done it myself but just in case in the future something happens. I really appreciate the feedback, job seemed easy enough but the peace of mind I guess. PS: The Mechanic 2.0 extended warranty does not cover hoses

Thanks for the update. It seems you were able to work out a fair, middle of the road compromise. It's also not a bad idea to build a little rapport with the tech, which it sounds like you might be doing. I think (but could be wrong) that BMW usually assigns a car to a tech and the same tech always works on the same car if possible. This could be useful in the future if trying to get something covered under warranty... you want the tech going to bat for you.

Have the same issue today... For my '14, originally completed as a defect in April of '15 at 14k miles, then again in Oct of '17 at 38k as part of normal warranty. Now i'm at 52k and leaking again. I'm hoping to work it out with my Service Adviser to get under the $1,200 they are quoting me here in Charlotte, NC...

Weird, I found this same issue today after getting some food. Pulled into the garage and saw something smoking and opened the hood. I could hear the sound of something burning. Took off the plastic over and bang, on of the rubber hose was leaking a little. Let the car cool down and took over the jacket.
I'm going to order a new set. I just cant find new heat shields or the part number for it. https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...t/11538092360/ |

Another update:
Good news, talked to the service manager, they do take my warranty "technician 2.0" and it does cover hoses. I'm being reimbursed $600+ whatever was spent on the lines. Very glad the warranty kicked in, he just had to call the dealership I purchased it through, and registered the warranty properly in their system, he says now they have the info, should be smooth sailing as far as the warranty in the future, extremely happy about this. The bad news. So before I took it to the dealer, I relocked my JDM and flashed back to stock. Drove it stock for a day, then installed my tune, I can't live without BM3 anymore, worth every cent. Driving it on a 40mph city street about 5 mins after I flashed, was driving it in comfort settings, using the paddles at the default second tranny setting. I slow down from 6th to stop at a red light, I feel a weird jerk. Brushed it off, maybe they reset something.. 30 seconds later when the light turns green, shifted from 1 to 2, the car was jerking like it's about to die! I pull over and turn the car off for 10 mins. Turn it back on, drove 2-3 mins back home, just sat there in idle in neutral to see if it jerks, and yep.. engine felt like it was going to die. Immediately turned my car off, flashed back to stock, hopefully the problem is gone. Just did my plugs and coils a month prior, car was driving beautifully, no issues. I also had my tires balanced and an oil change at the dealer (even though didn't need an oil change) would you think the oil has anything to do with it? The tank is half full with 93oct in it. Any advice I'd appreciate, maybe I should drive my car longer before I reinstall BM3? Thanks again everyone 🙏 PS you can still smell some coolant, but hopefully it's whatever was on the engine just burning off.

If your handy with a cutter and some tools it's much less stressful to actually do it yourself than to go 'through the dealer' rigmarole with this tiny issue and waste time.I purchased the synthetic hose and smooth worm clips and just replaced the two affected ones and covering with some heat proof silver gloves.I further improvised by adding a small thick sheet of cooking foil doubled up underneath the four flex pipes to double protect my work.
Every few months or so you can lift the cover lid in seconds to see if they're ok. |

Two years is still a while and the F90 will by then have it's own set of check list points. The turbo coolant flex pipes are a small bugbear easily fixed and the F90 will have something similar to cool the turbo's.
