Having a problem with some sort of drivetrain noise...
Hello!
I wanted to ask if anyone else with f10 m5 has had this problem. There seems to be some sort of bearing or something going inside my transmission. The shop that I go to says there are no rebuild kits or anything for the transmission available from BMW, but I was wondering does anybody reverse engineer bearings or anything like that? I'd rather FIX the tranny if possible as opposed to replacing the entire thing. The noise is best described as a rotational noise that gets louder with speed, its super loud in 4th, and 6th, if I'm in 6th and drop it to 5th a lot of the noise goes away, so I was thinking maybe it was the clutch for the even gears, but the noise doesn't lessen in 7th. So far I've done a complete service on the tranny, all new fluids/dct/differential, as well as new filters, and sent a sample off for metalurgical analysis which I'm waiting on right now. I really appreciate any and all info regarding this! |

I have pretty strong whine on 2nd which is barely noticeable on 1st and not detectable on other gears. My shop says many f10 m5 had that and only replacement of transmission would fix it. Otherwise benign..

Are you sure it’s not your rear end going out? Mine started to howl at higher speeds. Turns out it was the pinion bearing going out. Replaced it with a used unit for about $500 in parts.

Could be the diff noise is travelling 'up the shaft'. These diffs need an oil change every other engine oil change or every 20-25k or much earlier if car has been hammered a lot.
