Lock nut won't loosen
Evening all,
Went to the tyre shop to check my rear tyre which was loosing pressure. Turns out it was a nail. The tyre fitter tried to take the wheel off, but the lock nut wouldn't budge. He tried everything barring a long bar and jumping on it. He was too scared to jump on it as he said the lock nut thread will break/split... His advice was to take it to the dealers and get them to heat it up and remove it. Any thoughts or ideas? I really don't want to waste my time at the dealers over such a simple 'tyre change' issues. : Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated |

Taking it to the dealer might be the only choice. Or take it to another tire shop and see if they have an impact drill that could possible open it.

I've seen some take an undersized socket, smack it on and remove the lock nut. Most likely, you won't want to use it again. This is the reason lock nuts suck, imagine being on the side of the road and wanting to remove a wheel.

Use a large bar attached to the socket, tap the locking nut in place with a hammer, have someone apply pressure to the bar whilst you smack the head of the bar with a lump hammer. Keep the bar square at all times and get the person helping to apply more pressure if needed as you keep smacking it with a hammer. You need to make sure the shock of the blow goes directly through the head of the bar, socket and locking nut. This generally works depending how badly damaged they are. I actually removed one for a customer yesterday within about 5 seconds, it's not always possible though.
The problem here is jumping on bars with locking nuts attached, they need to be held as square as possible when loosening and tightening. |

After 4 attempts at different tyre shops, I called a lock nut remover specialist.
Final attempt before going to BMW who quoted me £499+vat to remove all bolts for the entire car and give me new ones.... They must have been smoking something. The specialist came down and removed all the over-tighten bolts and checked the rest. They have a special tool that unscrews the bolt with every hammer blow. Trust me it look a lot of blows to get them removed. But it's done for £90! Thank you all for your help! |

It's probably advisable to purchase replacement lock bolts seing what those went through and glad you had it done for a sixth of the price that Bm wanted including the dreaded +vat on top. |
