BMW M5 Enters 2012 One Lap of America (Live Race Updates Inside)
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com The Monte Carlo Blue BMW M5 will complete in a totally stock configuration, in other words exactly as you could walk into a BMW Dealership and purchase off the showroom floor. The only modifications we’ve made to the car is the installation of high performance brake pads and high temperature brake fluid. Powering the M5 is the new twin turbo V8 offering 560 horses and 500 lb. ft. of torque through a 7-speed M DCT transmission. And responsible for transferring all that power to the road is a set of Michelin Pilot Super Sports mounted on optional 20” wheels. Incidentally vehicles must be complete the entire event on ones set of tires. This BMW M5 is no lightweight either with a full complement for options including: Heated Seats & Steering Wheel, Navigation, Night Vision, Soft Close Doors, Comfort Access, Side & Top Cameras, Heads-Up Display, Premium Hi-Fi System, Rear Seat Entertainment, Blind Spot Detection, Lane Departure, and Sunshades. Yes we certainly have a luxurious ride! The focus for this year’s grueling One Lap of America is race tracks in the Mid-West states. Starting in South Bend, Indiana the 3200 mile route will take us through 11 states including Indiana, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Nebraska, Minnesota, and Wisconsin over a period of 8 days. Each day competitors will visit at least one race track and run multiple times trials, autocross, or drag strip. The complete schedule can be seen below, though it may change during the course of the event. As Brock Yates Jr often comments “The definitive route is determined after the last event”. The event is open to any road legal vehicle, and crewed by two or three drivers. There are twelve classes split by capacity and vehicle cost, with specific classes for SUV’s, classics, and alternative fuel vehicles. New for this year is a class for stock vehicle which is open to automobiles that has not been modified with the exception of wheels, tires, and brake material. Our BMW M5 will fight for honors in two classes; the over $50,000 luxury class where we’ll be up against the likes of BMW M3’s, Porsche Panamera’s, and Cadillac CTS-V’s, and the stock class which includes a Porsche GT3 RS, BMW X6M, Mini Cooper JCW, and Dodge Challenger. You can follow our progress through the list of social media outlets below, or for up to the minute progress follow us on twitter with the hashtag #onelapm5 www.facebook.com/bmwusa http://www.bmw.tv/com/ and of course this thread 2012 One Lap of America Schedule If you live near any of the venues we'll be visiting, we'd love for you to come and watch our M5 in action. Good luck! Wish I could make it to event. Saw the 335d last year at CMP.

One Lap of America Day 1 Update
Been a rather busy day, so I apologize for the lack of updates.
Today presented competitors with a full schedule of events. First we had the skid pad competition at Tire Rack. This comprises of three laps clockwise and three laps in an anti-clockwise direction on the wet skid pad, with results determined by the car & driver pulling the highest average G loading over the four laps. We’ll return to this venue next Saturday for the dry skid pad test followed by the ever popular smoke show. On leaving Tire Rack we made a short six mile drive to South Bend Speedway for the first real time trial. A quarter mile paved hort track oval, definitely different from many of the venues we normally visit. Once completed, we were off to Autobahn Country Club on the west side of Chicago for our third and final event of the day. This year we used the south course which is very familiar to us as this is the third time we’ve been here in the last four years. At each of these venues we must unload all our belongings and supplies, do a visual walk around, check fluid levels and tire pressures, and torque wheel bolts. Then we’ll walk the track to learn as much about the layout and surface changes as possible, hoping Mike will remember everything observed when our time for our run . Each time trials consist of a warm-up lap, and from a standing start two or three timed laps followed by a cool down lap. Once the runs are completed, we load everything back in the M5 and head for the next venue. After these three events we are 25th overall after a relatively cautious start. Now we've moved to the road courses we expect to make our move up the leader board. The complete results for each event and all the classes can be found by clicking on this link: http://onelapofamerica.com/event/Res....do?eventId=31 Tonight we’ll leave Autobahn around 6:30pm and drive approximately 450 miles to Council Bluffs, Iowa for a few hours sleep, then head out Sunday morning around 6:30am for Mid America Motorplex ready for a 8:30am start! |

We had a contingent of BMW CCA Iowa chapter members and a few others visit us today to watch the M5 in action.
What initially started as a wet & dreary day with high winds turned out to be a really nice as morning progressed. Track was damp for the early morning runners with standing water making things difficult for the early runners. When the results came in, we finished 19th. overall, not bad in these conditions. Times for the afternoon session should be available in a few hours after everyone has completed their runs. Time will certainly be lowered as the track got faster as time went by and the swirling winds dried out he track considerably. More to come. |

I'm following on Twitter and the OLOA results page.
Hopefully with dry weather and big tracks, the M5 can start kicking some butt.

2012 One Lap of America Schedule - Day 2
Today started out pretty miserable, weather wise. Teams awoke to loud thunderstorms, heavy rain and high winds as they made their way to Mid America Motorplex in Pacific Junction, Iowa. Believe it or not somehow we were the first team to arrive at the track to find the gates locked! Looking at each other, we began to compare our watches, think we’d arrived an hour early; criss-crossing time zone is mentally challenging. Anyway our fears were soon put to rest as a few minutes later the track workers arrived and opened the gates.
With all the heavy rain falling we decided to see if we could find shelter for the car and belonging, and soon found the tech shed which suited our purpose. Only problem was the roof leaked when the winds increased their ferocity, and soaked much of our equipment. For those that don’t know this track was closed for most of last year due to being underwater, due to the flooding that occurred in the area in 2011. Fortunately track management and their team had really worked diligently to make the track habitable again to race cars. The storms pushed back the start by an hour to 9:00am, and depending on how you look at it, fortunately the rains started to subside. The early runners would have referred the rain to continue so everyone had to tackle a wet track, while the later runners preferred a drying track for obvious reasons. After yesterday’s run at Autobahn, teams were re-classified based on their finishing position, so we were in the early group which meant Mike would have to learn the track on his recce lap, but also determine which water puddles were safe to transgress and which to avoid. This was SOP for probably the first 20 to 25 runners. After that a drying line began to appear and would allow the later runners an advantage. We were in the third run group and Mike peddled the BMW M5 around had a decent showing, but knew crews in our class running later would have significantly better times, thus reducing our points haul for the morning. After all the runs were complete we finished 19th overall and 5th in Luxury Class. By the time the afternoon sessions started, the track was dry except for the odd puddle here and there, so everyone would be on an even footing. And sure enough the times tumbled. Our morning time was 5:35.319 and the afternoon result was 5:23.701, placing us 13th overall and 2nd in class for the session. So we end the day in 19th overall and 3rd in class. We’d also like to thank all the enthusiasts who brave the elements and came to watch the BMW M5 and other One Lap Competitors in action. Like other competitors, as soon as our session is complete, we re-pack the car, grab a couple of drinks and hit the road for the next destination. This afternoon our destination was the Holiday Inn, Stillwater, part of the IHG hotel group who kindly agreed to support our team on this year’s One Lap of America. The car is washed, the team fed and I’m writing this from the comfort of my hotel room before catching a well-deserved sleep, before arising at 5:30 and heading off to Hallet Motor Racing Circuit for two time trials. If you are in the vicinity of one of the tracks we’ll be visiting this week, we’d love to meet you and show you the 2013 BMW M5. Not only is it a great opportunity to see the BMW M5 up close, but also the chance to watch just how amazing this car really is when put through its paces on the track. One set of Tires for the One Lap week...
Quote:
It is mostly a "how well can you warm-up?" style event. The road course time trials at each track normally happen twice per venue... For instance, in the Morning and then again after lunch. During each session, you take an un-timed warm-up lap then stop at start/finish to await your turn for a standing start. When the green flag drops, the timing starts. Your total elapsed time for the 3 laps determines your points. Fastest car wins. It's pleasantly simple. A top of the line street tire such as the Michelin Pilot Super Sport will usually be quite good for the short duration of the timed laps. The PSS is currently the ONLY tire that is BMW approved for the F10 M5. Besides, R comp tires are not allowed in One Lap of America rules. It is not in one's interest to choose a radical alignment (i.e. lots of negative camber) that will wear the inner shoulders on the highway transits. Damaged tires from road hazards are really the only legal reasons to change tires during One Lap. At the drag strip, there is a run to go for a low ET and to estimate a dial-in for the bracket drags. Only the finalists on the drags do more than about 3 runs. Not all that bad on the tire unless you insist on doing spectacular burnouts.

M5 is running really well. No overheating, or brake fade on the track. And it's extremely comfortable and easy to drive on the transit sections. Currently we're on our longest transit drive, Hallett, OK to High Plains Raceway, CO - approx 600 miles.

If it wasn't during the week, I would head out to HPR to check out this leg of One-Lap.
