ticking sound from front
Guys, just want to hear if anyone else has this.
I just started hearing a ticking sound from the front of the car, it may have been there for a while, it may be completely normal. Spring is here and I had the windows rolled down and that's when I heard it. It sounds just like when you have a small rock caught in the thread of your tire, changes with speed, and I was sure that was what it was. But no, checked all 4 tires, no rocks. Ticking sound is still there, seems to be on the side you load as well, turn right and it ticks from the right side, turn left and it ticks from the left, drive completely straight and it's quiet. I did think it could be the brakes, after all floating rotors do make a bit of sound, but, applying a slight braking force will not make the sound disappear, and I have the ceramic brakes and those don't seem to be floating in the same manner the steel ones are. Cant find anything loose and I can't really find any plausible explanation for the sound. -14 M5 competition pack w/ceramic brakes, bone stock suspension and wheels. Anyone have/had anything similar? |

It doesn't make that horrible sound that makes, this sounds just like a small stone or screw stuck in your tire. since the frequency changes with speed, it acts the same as well.
I'll teke the car out tonight on some quiet side roads and see if I can figure out some more, do some proper braking and see if the brakes are to blame after all, sticking brake pads or something. Edit: Been out really given the brakes a workout, at one time the active protection system kicked in and tightened my seatbelt Not much change, if any, still have a ticking on the outside front tire when turning. I checked my wheel bolts, and I guess they could have been tighter, I tightened all of them from 1/8 to 1/4 turn. Guess I'll have to see next time if that made a difference, if not I need to take the wheels off and do some sort of inspection. Last edited by Noggie; 05-28-2020 at 12:45 PM.. |

Well, tightening the wheel bolts seems to have done the trick.
All is quiet now. I did not expect that 1/8 to 1/4 turn was to blame. When I changed tires a month ago, I did them up with an impact gun and a 110nm/81ft lbs torque pin. Note to self: Torque the bolts by hand next time. |

I use 110nm on my older BMW, but they have M12 bolts, the M5 has M14 bolts so it makes sense the torque is higher, 140 seems right. I normally do them up with the impact gun with the toque and then with a wrench, but this time I forgot to use the wrench. This is also the first time I have had a "lose wheel" in 25 years of driving. |
