Bent Rod?

Uploaded BM3 Stage 1 on a stock car, less than a week later I got this noise today. Maybe 10hrs of run time tops

www.imgur.com/gallery/XIMGdxB

Maybe it is something else?

I have no lights on, car runs and drives- this happened down the block from home so drove it maybe 1000ft? Didn't drive any differently

Checked codes, no codes.

Do you have the BM3 and are having some car issues or is this a simple query?

That is what I'm thinking. Insane, this is a completely stock car, all maintenance up to date. Simple Stage 1 is all it took? Had the tune on for about a week, maybe 10hrs tops of total engine run time with the tune

I did the rods on my E60 a bit before I sold it and also as preventative...it was a good call after it was opened up .

Looks like you have some bad juju my friend.

So far no major concerns, unlike E9x w rod bearings and TAs.

Damn, that is rough, man. I've heard so many good things about BM3's OTS maps. I guess it is still a one-size-fits-all solution at the end of the day.

Any signs of knock beforehand? Running smooth?

Did you do any data-logging?

Car was running just fine, no sounds, nothing.

I didn't have it on long enough to do logs! Seriously probably 3-5hrs of run time

I feel your pain. Went through a similar experience with my old Subaru STI (though that's a much cheaper and easier to fix platform).

I know it's still fresh, but you'll go through the grieving stages - denial, anger, depression, bargaining, acceptance.

Please keep us posted. So many people hide their issues because of warranty concerns and they're trying to avoid keeping a digital footprint on the mods they did. With 60k miles, you're probably not in that boat.

I have 52k miles on mine and your post is scaring me into staying stock. I may still use the BM3 platform to live monitor even the stock condition. I read another post that even a stock motor will have tons of minor knock events as part of the normal knock detection and mitigation strategy.

Good luck!

Yea it seriously blows, I will likely sell the car as is. Its not worth spending $13-15K rebuilding the engine. Either way I would never feel comfortable with the car again.

Obviously i'd recommend you don't modify, though these cars do have issues even in stock form. Have a buddy with a BMW shop he's told me numerous times these engines always go, and to get rid of the car, I didn't listen. Thought it was owners who poorly maintained them, guess that is not the case. My last two cars were M3s (E46 and E92, those also have their issues but all items that can be avoided with preventative maintenance/replacements, the S63 can't be helped unfortunately)

I agree with sapphire, sounds like a rod knock. It's hit and miss with these cars . Makes me think twice about getting bm3 since I've seen more people complain about blown motors that use bm3. Then again a lot of happy customers that have bm3. It's probably just the luck of the draw my friend. Not a day goes by that I don't think if my engine will blow up regardless if it's tuned or in stock form.

Depends man. If this is your dream car and everything to you and you plan to own for many many years then by all means get a rebuild. If i could have gone back in time i would have never done the rebuild and just sold the car as is and let someone else throw a used or rebuilt engine in it. Financially i would have been miles ahead. also understand i had a crappy experience among others with my rebuilder which ended up costing me another $3k or more to fix their issues. finding a quality rebuilder seems to be difficult. If anything just find a used engine and install it and sell the car. My car is in pristine shape now from top to bottom and probably one best of the overall condition for a 2013 M5 but heck it put a hole in my wallet. Dont think on your emotions right now, let it sit for second and think through it all, put the numbers together and figure out what makes sense. And do tons of research on the engine builder if you go that route! something i did not do and regret very much so to this day.

For people that say the M5 is not reliable. It truly isnt the most reliable car but if you buy or drive one just look for good records on the car before buying and upon owning it drive it sensibly. Regular oil changes and limit your tuning to stage 1 or stock. I baby the hell out of my car, i personally do not want issues. Cool car but im done with BMW for awhile after this. There is a reason there are so many BMW rebuilders and shops

I think the big issue with tunes like BM3 (even stage 1) is they seem to add significantly to low end torque, which is a big rod stressor. Sucks terribly that you've had this happen, but I'm not sure it's necessary fair to say the S63Tu is thus unreliable.
