I have got this issue from doing 3rd gear pulls and also when driving the car hard. I think I figured out the reason for it and its something you can check if you guys have had this similar issue. You need to check these clamps I circled on the attached image to see if you have any oily residue around where the clamps are attached. The clamps BMW uses seems to not keep enough tension on the hoses and boost was leaking on mine. The blue lines on the picture was where I was getting boost leak whenever I would get near redline. I had an oily residue around the rim of where the turbo's clamp to the hose and the hose had slipped back a little and not fully around the original placement around the turbo's. I figured since it only happened during high boost and when the car was hot the boost leaked out there and caused my DTML.

What I did to fix it was buy some 2.5" ring clamps (the ones with the 8mm screw fasteners) from Autozone and replace them with these clamps. Cheap fix and haven't had it happen again!

Question is how often do you drive at full throttle/red line and do you subject the car to sustained hard driving, i.e. is there an underlying cause to the effect in this instance?

Spinny02 I believe this poll should be expanded to ask is how does one drive in general, not just at the time of failure, i.e. scale from gently all the time to red line/full throttle wherever feasible, cornering style, track use, etc. It would also be interesting to see where stock vs piggy/tune sits against this scale. Results of such a poll may be better represented as a matrix rather than a straightforward list. My purely speculative view is that the DT MAL is most likely related to how the car is generally driven rather than at the time of failure or specifically related to a tune (which will increase potential for failure). I doubt it's a manufacturing/design defect.
Stock F10 2013. Driving moderately. Usually on restart, not while driving. Noticing on these boards that this happens more on 13s than 14s. Anyone else seeing this pattern?

With the SA right now. Hoping beyond hope it's just a sw update issue.

Some of the stock dtm may be due to low fuel.
Stock here. Got "Engine temp - Drive moderately", then a week later, "DT Mal - drive moderately". Both with 3/4 full tank of gas. Both times driving mellow. 20-30 minutes of driving, then shutting off, then starting up again 10-20 minutes later and message shows up. DT code went away after about 5 mins of idling in parking lot.

Car is with SA at the moment... so far, they cannot find anything.

Had a '12 X5M without a single issue, guess it's payback time.

Haven't got my M5 yet but I had a DT malfunction with my X5M early on (no tune).

Never had it again even with a tune so far.

Hmm....I've had that "engine temp" message a couple times after just regular driving (~20 min); no hard accelerations. I was a little surprised because to me, it indicates the engine is close to overheating?? Havent had the DT MAL pop up....*knock on wood....2014 M5.

'13 m5, downpipes, filters BPM Stage 2 flash. Had drivetrain malfunction happen 5 months ago (prior to tune) after I over revved briefly while racing someone on the highway in manual mode. After a few hours, it went away.

However, after I got the tune, I was doing pulls last friday and got the drivetrain malfunction in 3rd gear and 75% throttle. Car immediately went into limp mode. Since last friday, car has not gone out of limp mode. Ran the code and it is cylinder 5 misfire.

I am currently at the dealer; they swapped coil and plug and that didn't do anything, swapping injector next. If the injector swap doesn't work, they'll be doing internal damage diagnostic.

Hoping for the best...

Today I just got a Drive train Malfuntion. 2013 m5 with stage 2 dinan tune and dinan intakes. I did a few WOTs. Also the weather was pretty hot out in central California.

After powering off the car, it seems it reset itself and the warning is gone.

I think piggybacks and actual flash tunes should have separate voting categories. Flashes should never throw DT malfunctions if they are done correctly. That's obviously provided that there isn't an issue that would cause the DT error in stock form.

Never had this on any of my 3 F10 M5.

The coils are good, I just took the car to BMW and the said code 121301- pressure control sensor 2. They said this is the problem. No gap, haven't changed the plugs

Today I just got a Drive train Malfuntion. 2014 M6 with stage 2 dinan tune, dinan intakes, catted AMS DP, full exhaust.(installed 1 month ago) I was at WOT 145mph, 1000 revs before redline, 3/4 tank of gas. It started to misfire and reduced power. I pulled over turned ignition off then back on and DT malfunction went away.
My car is no longer making the power it made prior to DT malfunction. It feels like it's not making as much boost. Going to the dealer in the morning.?

Had this error, and checked it was misfiring. Car forgot about the error and it was ok... So I went to get all coilpacks changed...

I pushed it hard again and got the DT error. FML.

Hmmm Seems like the issue is on cars without flashes and piggybacks as well.

Is BMW gonna step in and do something about this, if not. How do we get them to?

Got the message on start up today. Turned the car off, then back on...message gone. I later checked for a DTC in the secret menu but there was nothing. Strange.
