Top Tip
if you do make sure you wash the oil off first, effects the MAF sensors which will give you a misfire. just had a nightmare with this problem £250 in MAF sensors alone! |

Oily MAFs are definately a problem with oiled air filters. If you still have the old MAFs try cleaning them with a very specific MAF cleaner spray. Available at most car parts locations.
They might be fine. |

the filters come pre oiled so you need to either wash them in hot soapy water and leave them to dry over night before fitting or go with dry filters

I did this method last week. Way better than removing all the torx screws. Thanks

I just did this the way OP posted, was very easy 20 min start to finish. Removed the Charcoal filters and waiting for my drive later

If indeed the charcoal filter is not there on the Euro F10 M5's, I would be inclined to remove mine, as well. Not certain on that, though.
As for a reusable air filter, AFE makes a reusable dry air filter that is not oiled. As others have mentioned, I would not recommend using an oiled filter with a MAF. AFE claims 99.2% filtration efficiency and I wouldn't otherwise even consider another filter that did not at least claim to filter as well as a paper filter. AFE also claims that it even permits more air flow, 549 cfm compared to stock 377 cfm. I've used AFE and AEM dry filters in the past and I have been impressed with the construction of the filters. They say they will last the life of the vehicle and they look like it. Cleans with soap and water, just let dry before you reinstall them. https://www.ecstuning.com/b-afe-part.../31-10238~afe/ https://afepower.com/afe-power-31-10...ilter#overview https://afepower.com/product-catalogs/air-filters

im pretty sure that guy did a video before this one where he took the airbox apart in the engine bay with a hinged ratchet.. freaking nearly impossible!
-so i had to figure this out on my own. i just watched a vid on completely removing oem to install an aftermarket intake, and voila, easy as hell - this guy is also wrong about the charcoal filter, 575hp car gasping for air is not optimal. the car was not designed to have 4 filters. the 2 charcoal filters are simply there on US spec M5's to satisfy strict california emissions regulations and their job is to filter fluorocarbon (and other gasses)backflow on shutdown and while setting. [bmw just shipped all us spec cars with CA standards because you can imagine the logistics nightmare of having only a few us specs meet CA requirements and making sure only they went to CA etc etc] get that AFE dry wire mesh enforced filter and youre good to go. |

Great video! Took me 30 minutes to take out the air box's, replace the stock air filters with AFE dry filters, remove the charcoal filters and put everything back in its place. The new sound is amazing and I can definitely feel the difference in the throttle response. Can't wait to do resonator delete next!

I just did this today. What a PITA. I had to do a hybrid approach as I could not get the box to come out. There was another rubber attachment for the box into the chassis which I could not detach.
I ended up taking the intake tube off, unbolted the torx, and unclipped the front of the box, just so that I could twist the box a few centimeters such that I can get to Screw #7. I ended up changing the filter with the bottom half of the box attached to the car. I couldn't even access Screw #7 on the passenger side, ended up doing the filter with everything in tack, including prying the charcoal filter out.

*make sure to pull straight up as the tube coming from the front grille goes into a slot on the box.

yeah you really have to remove piece by piece to remove that hard to get to screw under the trunking then when re-assembling use your hand to locate the slot of the bottom half of filter case at the bottom of the grille there to snuck it into that intake slot.I tried it with completed airbox assembly and it wouldn't go.
