Gear engagement bump after cold start
Hello All
do any of you get a thump when engaging gear from an overnight cold start, I am getting varying degrees of an aggressive thud when either selecting reverse or 1st gear from a cold start from the P position. at times its almost as the gearbox is going to expload its that agreesive and the car can lunge forward or backwards Is this normal ? Thanks |

it does seem to be less if i let the car idle for a few seconds from cold before selecting gear, I dont like letting the car idle when cold for obvious reasons.
I did have it checked but came back as no fault found, I just cant see this as being normal |

Same, surely cold start is for oil circulation as well... so no load on engine until this is done! Like above 15secs or so....

The bump is normal, I had it in my 14 and also in the 15. Only happens once though after a cold start.

Hi
My car is a 13 with c50k and the **gears** engage like butter, hot or cold. I don’t do any of the stuff described below on startup , I just drive away after seconds. What you describe is alarming. Are you sure it’s gears? Is the thunk the normal pads ‘welding’ themselves to the disks? I used to leave a car on a seafront for 3 months. Pulling away needed 3000rpm. If I don’t drive for a while in the m5 there is a pad thunk. It would feel like a transmission thunk. |
