Turbo care

Up to this point in time, from my participation on this forum, I have read only small tidbits as to "how to care for your turbo" with regards to lubrication. What I am talking about is when an M5 owner is out for a day or night or hard running with you car, do you let the motor run at a low rpm for a minimum of time to prevent coking of the oil left in a very hot turbo.

I know that some big rigs have a turbo timer which can be set by the driver to achieve a complete and proper cool down of the oil going thru the oil system and turbo. It is a problem with big rigs after running up and down mountains and passes where the turbo takes a beating. Any thoughts?

It's always beneficial for the turbos after some hard running to take away the heat there by some low rpm running for say ten minutes and of course the aux electric pump continues to flow coolant through the turbos after you switch off.

That's why it's so important to have a full charge battery. No need to leave car running if your battery is full charge. Just a little info on these cars is that the battery charges on deceleration and when the ecu sees that the battery is 80% it's considered full charge. So what I do is trickle charge my battery every few months. The ecu measures the battery when the motor is off and will turn off the aux waterpump before it's finished cooling the turbos if it's low, causing the oil to cook in the lines eventually causing a blockage which in the end will cost you a turbo. So battery maintenance is super important for turbo maintenance. And by the way bmw recommends changing the battery every oil change lol.

Appreciate the information. It's good to learn something new every day. Unfortunately, I had to learn the hard way, all about replacing the battery and why it is very important to code the change in the ecu.

Do you have a source for the information regarding how long the aux fan/pump runs after shutdown?

Thanks. I assume in that section it describes how the battery state affects the duration? I didn't see battery state of charge in the list of what determines the duration the fan or pump runs?

The IBS measures the state of the battery. When it gets to low it'll start to shut off non essential electronics. So yes if your battery is low then it'll affect the cooling process. Bmw has a ecu update to address the sensitivity of the IBS.
