Steering Rack Noise
Today, I was turning my wheels to access the strut bodies so that I could adjust the damper settings and heard and felt a loud "pop." I can pretty much reproduce it at will if I turn the wheel lock-to-lock. I just had new coil-overs installed last week, but want to believe that's unrelated. Could it be a bad tie rod? I've read that it can be normal for the rack to make noise when stationary - and I usually get a certain amount of whine, especially if going full lock while parking, for example - but this sound is definitely new.
I'm scheduled at the dealer anyway tomorrow morning for a coolant flush, and will bring this up with them, but I know they think I'm a pain in the ass because I was in there 2 or 3 times last month for suspension noises (eventually traced back to a bad aftermarket strut - which is why I'm on new coils). I'm getting really tired of the snaps, crackles, and pops that my car is becoming fond of making. Makes me wonder if I should've stayed stock, but then my car would be a LOT less fun to drive. Any ideas?
