If it's not broken, don't fix it.
So we'll just use a camera to feed into what was the rear view mirror. What could possibly go wrong? WTF??

They forgot that it snows and rains on occasion...I'm sure those cameras will work flawlessly.

If properly adjusted full field of view out of both mirrors is possible in a vehicle such as the Polestar 4. Last edited by BeEmVe; 04-18-2023 at 11:03 PM.. |

I think this is what it's gonna be like with electric cars. Stupid and completely pointless features like this, crab walking, fake exhaust noises, fake "manual" transmissions, etc. All proliferating throughout the automotive industry because otherwise what's going to separate one electric vehicle from the next?

The point is mirrors work, all the time. So lets put a camera instead. It's another potential failure point. Whether that is due to the elements or a malfunction, it's something else to go wrong. Like I said, if it's not broken, don't fix it.

If I’m not mistaken, those Mercedes sprinter vans don’t have rear windows either and rely on a camera. And those been around for a bit. It’ll be a learning curve for the masses but is doable.

No the point is that side mirrors work and are what are needed for driving safely. The rear view mirror is nice to have not a need to have.

Interesting idea. Seems unnecessary but good for them trying to think outside the box.

I was really making a joke. But the E86 Coupe does has very poor C-pillar visibility, which makes it difficult backing out of parking spaces in crowded, busy parking lots. On-road driving is not too bad in the E86 if you know how to correctly place the side mirrors, though most drivers are not properly trained so. The straight-back view from the interior mirror is functional enough; better than a motorcycle in any respect, but certainly not E30-level.
The pics of this Polestar 4 reminded me of the E86 rear hatch profile, which brought to mind my sarcastic comment. |

Looks decent. Folks talking about snow and such...I mean really? Half the ass's driving in snow barely clear their windshield let alone the rear window. Hell, that's probably who designed it.
Personally I think it would bug me at first, but if the rear view mirror display works well, I'm sure I'd adapt quickly. I have enough injuries that looking over my should out the back window isn't done too often any more.
