M5 and MSport front bumpers look very similar. I think I prefer the look of the MSport with fogs. M5 rear bumper better looking hands down.

How does the engine in the M5 feel compared to the 550i in terms of power delivery? Grunt? Turbo lag? Please let us know as soon as you have a chance to drive your beast more! Also how are the brakes compared to the 550i? More/less sensitive?

Yeah, I'd like to hear about acceleration, acoustic and other engine differences as well.

I really think that if you were not told about the piped in sound ahead of time you'd never know - it is very subtle - more of an enhancement in my opinion.

Yes - it is the new iDrive Professional Navigation system (609) for 2013. Everything is there from the original press release that BMW put out awhile back - except the gesture touch surface. That will probably come later on. The new system has enhanced menu graphics, the audio playback for Apple devices shows more information and it is much faster than the 2012 version. There are a number of other changes that you can read about.

I was out in the Newport Beach area over the weekend, but not on Newport Coast Drive. It was probably SealionBeast. You know how Southern California is - we get all of the new cars here. The uniqueness of my ride has already begun to wear off.

Just kidding - it will be great to see other M5's around OC.

When their noses are facing each other, the M5 seems to be 1/2" to 3/4" taller than the 550i. Does the suspension setting change the ride height? I could blame the angle of the photo but in all the images you post I can see the M5 sitting higher. It's a bit surprising considering the intent of the two cars.

Enjoy your new ride, I am sure you will be putting some quick miles on that monster over the next couple of weeks.

Best,

Jo

I should have touched on this. This was probably due to the angle of my photos - the cars actually look to be identical in height when you look directly across the hood or roof from the side. According to the BMWUSA website - the 550 is 57.6" at the highest point versus 57.3" on the M5. Keep in mind that this may or may not change with different wheel options. My 550 has the 19" M Sport wheels whereas my M5 has the 20" wheels. In person (and at the correct angle) you cannot tell any difference in height.

Good to hear. I pick up my F13/M6 coupe in about a month and being a tech junkie I was hoping the new system was rolling out as expected.

good review and comparison. However, I feel like BMW went too soft in designing the ///M5 and hopefully that concept does not trickle down to the M3

+1

Saw an M5 at a dealer the other day and on another note, its gas mileage still blows and has a gas guzzler tax. Very disappointing. Hopefully that also doesn't trickle down to the M3. It will be a shame to sacrifice the NA V8 for the turbo 6 just for 2 MPG more...
