I criticize them too lol. There is too much money in everyone gets a trophy, instead of having a unique elusive performer 640 credit score and 10k for MSDS and you can be special too lol

Hm...if the new M5 really uses ZF auto instead of Getrag DCT, it will be disappointing to some. But I am sure BMW knows what they are doing, if they use ZF they must be confident enough that it will be good.

I also saw this news and was disappointed. Kind of odd since I mentioned this May of 2016 in a M5 spy video on the nurburgring that the gear changes and exhaust pitch for the ratios sounded like the ZF8 and not a DCT and 'SCOTT26' the insider guy said its an upgraded M-DKG transmission

Ferrari 488 uses the most updated GETRAG DCT but even that version was only rated at 750Nm, so if the new M5 has a massive bump in torque, maybe that's why the DCT was thrown out.

Of course they could have worked on an even newer version of DCT to handle the torque who knows.

I don't know how accurate Autocar's source is but I guess we will know more as we get closer to launch date.

I couldn't be happier with the new M5 getting a ZF automatic. The current DCT has issue in smooth clutch engagement. Having owned the car for 5 years, i can say that it doesn't enagage the clutch smoothly for a quick and smooth getaway from the lights. When you just wanna move off smoothly and gradually, it doesn't move. Step on it a little more and it snaps your neck. For a monster sedan, a DCT really isn't required. ZF has been producing many great automatic boxes for a long time now. I have no doubt their M variant would not disappoint. AWD and rear wheel steer are features I am most excited about!

I was kind of hoping for a 'switchable' RWD/AWD system in the new M5.. that would have been pretty cool. But no doubt expensive.. but don't Mercedes do that in the E63 AMG already? The CP may well come with some surprises in a couple of years.. more than just 15 more ponies and new wheels... we shall see

Damos,
Im almost sure, the info i have is, that when in sport+ the new M5, is virtually RWD ?, maybe incorrect, but this is my understanding atm.

The new PDk in the .2 Turbo S is fantastic , given it dyno'd on a MAHA at 580 lb feet , no reason that couldn't work on the M5 . Instant response and very smooth from a start . Hell it will even do a mini LC (clutch drop from 4500 rpm)if you floor it from a stop in Sport plus !! My point is there are PDk's that can handle big awd tq available for BMW to use . And having owned an M6 dct I can say the new PDk in the Turbo S is a fantastic improvement . Tech keeps moving on .

ZF's PDK is co-designed with Porsche though, maybe some kind of agreement that only Porsche can get it?

Getrag's best DCT is the one all Ferrari uses (including LaFerrari), rated at 750Nm (the one F10 M5 uses is rated at 700Nm), which is the same as ZF's previous 7 speed PDK (no detail on the torque rating of new ZF 8 speed PDK that I can find). So unless BMW can get Getrag, ZF or whoever to design a new DCT, otherwise, if it wants to continue to use DCT, looks like BMW is stuck with Getrag (assuming ZF can't sell PDK to anyone besides Porsche).

But if what Autocar said is true, BMW is bypassing the Getrag DCT and go straight to ZF's 8 speed auto which is rated up to 1000Nm.

My point is the my $&@@ is too big argument is what Mercedes has used for god knows how long now to justify their use of an auto in AMG cars and it's just as BS coming from BMW . If they want to use a dct they can . Hell the Panamera Turbo S hybrid will have 800 nm and a PDK . Last time I checked the Veyron has had a DCT for how many years now ???

The point is here is "application". My sales engineer fren at Porsche told me that many of his clients find PDK not particularly smooth and not suited for a big sedan. That's despite the fact that Porsche's PDK behaves more like an auto compared to BMW. Their PDK actually creeps when you let off the brakes like a traditional auto does. Most owners of big monster sedans don't drive their cars like a sports car and expect more from the car than simply engagement and lightning quick shift times.

But to me DCT is fun and I like it much better than ZF8; however I agree with you about the smoothness of ZF8 over DCT. ZF8 is a really great Gearbox but kind of lazy... It was good for my 650i but not my M6 IMO...
Clar the 6MT is lots of fun BTW
