Negotiating ED price
I am thinking about ordering a 2014 M6 for ED. This would be my first ED. Anybody have any tips on how to negotiate the ED price? Or since the car is a custom order should I be prepared to pay MSRP?

There are enough M5s out there on dealer lots that it should be clear to most dealers the buyer has the leverage, so I would think you can negotiate a reasonable deal. I would call a couple dealers near you and ask each what profit over invoice they want to place an ED order. Tell them you are calling a few dealerships and will come in to place the order with whichever dealer offers the most compelling price.

So there is a relationship between unsold inventory on lots and custom ordering a car for ED? I can see the leverage (obviously) for buying a car from inventory. Ordering one, the leverage becomes less obvious to me.

First off, sorry about my first post - I referenced the M5 and missed that you are inquiring about the M6. However the same logic applies if there is a reasonable amount of in-stock inventory on dealers' lots.

When you want to order a car, your leverage lies in which dealer you will buy from. If there is available inventory of the car at numerous dealerships it is an indication of soft market demand for the car. Each dealer is eager to sell cars so you are pitting the local dealerships against each other to win your business.

The linkage goes like this:
A buildup of inventory suggests a dealer has more allocation than they can easily sell. So even with the next model year, they will likely also have excess allocation. So they can't argue that inventory is scarce and use that to justify a premium. They would rather reduce inventory and selling a pre production allocation enables them to do that. It is one less car that will hit the lot.

You should try to talk to dealers that specialize in euro delivery. Check out the euro delivery forum at bimmerfest for some ED dealers...

Go to bmwconfig.com and configure the m6 to your liking and click on european delivery pickup. Once you see what invoice is for ED find a dealer that has an allocation for m6. Offer them $1000 to $2000 over ED invoice. Good luck.
