Best Radar detector?
What is everyone's view of the best radar detector? Is there a clear winner or not? I have a ten year old V1 that appears to be a current model but is that possible given how old it is? Thanks

I love my V1 still.... You know you can send it in and they'll update it to today's version right? It doesn't take them long. They upgrade the software and hardware as needed. Give them a call, have your product number ready, and they'll let you know what you're in for.

I don't profess the escort passport max to be the best, but ever since I got one (had it for 6 months now), I have not had any "red light camera" tickets. Also recently, it has incorporated into its "red light camera database, known speed traps giving out the message "caution, speed trap ahead". So, in my opinion, the best detector is the one that works to alert you of any possible traffic ticket.

Do a search for a comparison test that either Car and Driver or Motor Trend did recently. Can't remember which magazine but should be on teh web.

For windshield mount it's the Escort Redline as far as warning distance, followed by V1.
For full installed it's bel stir + takes the win. I own both a bel stir + and a V1. (never owned a Redline, STIR+and V1 provide more than enough warning for me) I would consider the Escort Max if you live in the city because of it's learning function. The V1 can be very noisy. Buy buying the Max you will sacrifice some range but you will be more "alert" because all the falses will be silenced via the Max's learning functions. I often think about buying the Max and putting the v1 in the glove box when I am in the city because it goes off non stop. If you have a Android phone there is a great app called YaV1 that essentially acts as the learning function (like the Max) and makes the V1 more of a city option. V1 also has an app that you can lesson the freq.'s that it will alarm at based what type of radar the police in your area have (assuming you know their freq).

Been pretty happy with my Passport 9500ci, installed last week. Not many falses and stealth install...
V1 is a good detector, but falses too much. Escort, I think, has surpassed them in terms of technology.

I really like my max which replaced my solo S2. I considered the V1 and redline to but since I live in the city and that's where most of my driving is. The Solo went off so much I found myself not paying much attention to it. Also it displays the frequency of the band which helps determine if it's a cop or something else. It has learned my commute so if it goes off I know to slow down. The range is very close to a redline. The max also displays GPS speed so I know exact speed since the cars is a little optimistic

I would vote for bel stir + for a built in or escort max for portable. I am a former V1 owner.

i have had this setup in my m3 for quite some time.
http://www.radar-mirror.com/Store_V1_Mirrors.html Looks professional and you can have your homelink button used at a mute option. It is a bit pricey and you lose laser protection. |

If you are considering spending the $$$ for a built in system, you should call Todd at AI Design in Tuckahoe. They have done all my systems and do amazing work. He will walk you through the various options and the pros and cons of each. You can tell him I sent you over if you want.

Passport 9500ix (hardwired) gets the job done for me. However, I never go faster than 125 here on the city freeways. Only (minor) drawback is having to put it away when parking ex-home.
