Developed Engine rattle/ knocking

Hey All

Hope you are all safe and well during the current Pandemic.

I have unfortunately developed an engine knock/ rattle which has come after a spirited drive.

Car has been well looked after, full service history and been in my ownership for over 2 years now and has never missed a heartbeat.

I have uploaded a couple of videos to youtube.

Can you guys shed some light on your thoughts please?

I believe it is the dreaded crank bearing failure however the sound/ rattle seems to be a little high pitched and sounds seems to come from the top of the engine rather than the bottom. But i am no expert!

Turbos are fine
Manifold gaskets seem to be ok by visual inspection around the edges of the head but has not been stripped.
No errors recorded other than the DDE reporting a cylinder 5 misfire when the issue happened

Any and all pointers welcome

Thanks guys

Sorry to hear that, it sounds more like crank bearing failure as you suggest or even a bent rod.
Certainly removing the sump to reveal what's there is needed and probably at the same time to replace the rod bearings also.

Thanks guys.
Thought it was the dreaded crank bearings but wanted a second opinion.

Goes to show it can happen any time.
Car was fully serviced and very well looked after by me with only 37k on the clock.
Unbelievable!

These type of posts are definitely making me rethink my decision to buy an F10 M5. I am coming from an E60, which constantly had me living in fear.

Why live in fear about car? Things are bound to break. You can go on any car maker's forum and find the same post about things breaking. Buy what you want to buy and deal with whatever happens.

I've been daily driving mine for 5 years and only had to swap out the battery. I'm sitting at 114k miles today trouble free.

This is my second f10 M5. Other than minor issues here and there, they’ve both been good to me.

This is a factory high horsepower European performance car, not a Honda Accord. It will have issues.

Also, for every person who posts up about blowing their engine up, there's a million who don't post up to say they didn't blow theirs up!!!

All valid points. I am coming from an e60 M5 and proper maintenance, warm up, and cools down periods made it a very enjoyable vehicle without issues for the 25k miles I put on it.

I am no stranger to expensive repairs either, as my garage is currently filled with land rovers, my daily LR having 306k miles on it... I was just hoping that BMW rod bearing were a thing of the past.

I am also in the market for an F10 M5, seeing these posts makes me a bit uneasy. However i have also owned 2 E60 M5's and both were good to me as others are saying. Most work i did was on the first one having need both throttle actuators and clutch sensor at one point. I also had an E46 M3 and did rod bearings and sub reinforcement for peace of mind. I think it honestly goes without saying, that in order to own these cars, you need to pay to play. OP, wish you luck and hope you can sort this out and its easy on the wallet.

When you say well looked after, we all have our own opinions on this so what does well looked after mean to you? (If that makes sense).

I'm intrigued to know how frequently oil services were carried out and what oil was used etc.

Thanks in advance, and sorry to hear about the problem you have

Sorry about your lose man, really does sucks. But like other's have said, its kinda just random with these engines. I had a '13 M5 with catless downpipes and stage 2 tune and I drove the crap out of my car (owned it from 51-84k miles). Car did very well and besides the fixing the coolant hoses. I did change the oil every 4-5k miles with Liquid Moly 5W-40 to keep on the maintenance. As well as all the other maintenance items as they came up. These are very fun and fast car but do have the risk of breaking.

I owned my car for 2 years. In that period i didnt even have to change a fuse! It was very reliable until it drained all the juice out of me in one go!

I guess it was just my misfortune.
I believe it run low on oil.

Normally if the car was getting low on oil it would pop up a error on the idrive to top up.
However i had nothing. After the issue happened and i plugged a diagnostics, it was telling me low oil of 1litre.

For me well looked after is allowing start warm up, cooling period, servicing etc as well as treating the car with passion rather than a workhorse!

My car was serviced by myself at 32k. Mileage now was 37k.
I normally service every year regardless of mileage but due to Covid lockdown the car was hardly used so did not bother.

I have since unfortunately sold the car. Hopefully the new owner can bring it back to its former glory.

To be honest this did put me off BMW.

However after much searching and test driving different cars i am now on the hunt for another F10 M5 😁

Its only until you have owned one that you realise how special they are!!

Sorry to hear this man. What symptoms popped up when it was failing/failed? Who is doing the rebuild?
