Buying/selling car

Double checking my intuition here, but in a private party sale has a buyer ever placed the payment not being released until they pass their state vehicle inspection and them titling/registering car?

All other car sales I've done have never had a buyer requesting that. Car is CPO, clean CarFax, 0 accident, and no mods. Would you inspect prior to purchase?

If the buyer titles/registers the car, they are now the owner.... Never sign over a title until you have all of the money...

Hopefully I'm reading this right so the buyer is holding the funds because the car needs to pass inspections... Like Mberbic said, who ever have the title is the owner of the car. I've never given the title over until the check clears and the funds are in my account. I have had buyers request to get the car inspected by a dealer, etc.. But that's a cost to the buyer.

I should clarify, the title hasn't been signed and handed over without payment yet. more accurately, has anyone ever had a buyer in a private sale try to make the terms based on state inspection/titling & registering?

I'm against it even if the buyer uses an escrow mostly for the liability of not having payment and whatever that could happen in between. Based on a couple of other requests the buyer is making, I am thinking the buyer hasn't done much research on how a car sale goes.

I have bought and sold more than a dozen cars privately.
This is the first time I've heard of anyone requesting this.

I see you're in NC, is the potential buyer also in NC?
If so, provide them with proof of your current state inspection.

Also, explain to them, they cannot legally title or have the state inspect it without having the title in hand or being the registered owner.
They won't have the title until they remit full payment.

One alternative and I might not be 100% on this, but offer to have the vehicle inspected yourself. This would only cost $30 and that should hopefully ease their mind.
I believe they would then have to have it inspected again once they title it but not sure about that.
Also unsure if you can even have it inspected outside of it's normal inspection cycle.

Just food for thought.

There are escrow services that provide this service. I've not used them before, but they will verify that funds have been collected, handle the title transfer once the buyer has confirmed receipt and inspection of the car.

www.escrow.com is an example.
