Uh oh. Warning sign?

Started car yesterday afternoon — had already driven an hour earlier — and within 5 seconds, experienced RPM surge/fluctuation/flutter and engine shut off. Restarted (2x with extended crank to eventually turn over) and engine shut off again.

Decided to try the ol' "Reboot Trick" by getting out of car, locking it, and waiting a minute. Car then started right up and everything was normal.

Thoughts?

Tune and intake pipes addition may have a bearing.Best to put an OBD11 or Carly on it and get some codes. If nothing then and it's running right then put it down to a glitch which you can expect from time to time especially with tune additions.

Could be the low pressure fuel pump taking a dump.

See if it has codes stored, as previously suggested.

Keep us posted.

ALMOST correct! Two codes coming up: (A) 11B401 HPFP fuel at or after the release of injection (second environmental condition by time delay) to low pressure; and (B) 11A401 HPFP fuel injection upon release, too low pressure.

Question is, now what do I do about it? Does this mean HPFP is failing or just one-time glitch?

I don't remember what tune you have.. if it's a flash one switch it off and zero the codes then see if FP comes up again.

It's possible that it's a tune related glitch but I wouldn't chance anything with the high pressure side. I think our 2013's use an older HPFP which has known issues. Might want to replace for peace of mind. I would agree with the above statement to remove the tune for a day or two if possible and see if it still acts up. Either way, if it's the pump causing the issue, it might not show itself with the tune "off" versus when it might be working harder turned "on".

A more proper diagnosis would be to follow the test plan in ISTA for those codes. Monitor low and high pressure on cold start, etc.

Thanks for the advice. I have had a BMS Stage 1 tune on the car for a few months with no previous issues. Thinking maybe I just let the dealer check it out since it's under warranty with Route 66. Doubt they will care that the car is tuned.

Just a thought that the fuel filter may need replacing if it was spluttering. In US cars it's in the fuel tank as far as I know accessible from removing the rear seat.Could be debris being sucked into partially clogged filter making the pump work harder and with the tune also, even more. Don't let the fuel drop more than a 1/4 tank and I think it's worth looking into this, not such a hard and complex job.

I believe the EU6 injectors came out in 2014, (ref. the link below to verify your particular build date. Dump a bottle of Redline SI-1 fuel injector cleaner with a fresh tank of premium from your favorite top-tier gasoline (Costco for me), and see if it goes away or not. If not, you may need to change the injectors; (haven't heard good things about the previous EU5 injectors.)

I'd recommend an accurate diagnostic assessment using the test plans laid out in ISTA.

Guidance on how to diagnose was laid out in this thread.

If you're unable to perform the diagnostic tests then I suggest you take the car to a shop.
