Carbon Ceramic Brakes

Anyone have any long term experience with the CCBs? How have they held up? Have you changed the pads? Have you switched over to steel?

Thanks in advance.

My M5 has ceramics, I absolutely love them. I don't track my car, but I drive it very very hard. I've done some crazy braking.
Once had to slam on the brakes hard as the car in front of me came to a complete stop on the highway out of nowhere. They prevented an accident from happening. I for sure thought I had at least messed the rotors some what bad. When I pulled off the highway, I inspected them and nothing happened to them.
To this very day, I haven't had a single issue with my ceramics. Haven't changed the pads. They are fragile though, as long as you take care of them they'll take care of you.
I'm getting ready to order an F90 M5, I'm definitely getting ceramics. Steel brakes wouldn't cross my mind once. They work amazing from what I've read, but I'd never go back to steel brakes.

I have them on mine.

approx 94.000km/58.000Mi.

No visible wear, during normal use, they should last the lifetime of the vehicle.
At least 250.000km/155.000Mi with normal use.

I would definitely get them again.

There are pros and cons though.
Pros:
no brake dust
no need to replace
very good stopping power and feel
dont rust and look like new all the time

Cons:
squeaks from time to time, especially when wet.
can be damaged by wheel cleaner and chemicals
can be damaged by stones and chip
can be damaged during wheel change and can chip
VERY!!! Expensive to replace if damaged.

My front right has a chip in it, but it was within BMW's tolerance, a new one was $6000, and you need to change the pads, so that's another $1000.

Thanks for the replies. I have 60,000kms on mine and there is 13mm left on the pads. No wear on the rotors.

On the 'no wear on rotors' comment, have you removed them and had them weighed cire? As I believe that is the only way to determine when they need replacement through wear (rather than other external damage).

Second that. I had several cars with CCB and weighing them with a high precision scale is the easiest way to determine the true wear. The minimum weight is stamped on each rotor, thickness is not an indicator for the rotors. There are also 3 visual indicators on the front of the disc and three indicators on the back. These dots will open up if the discs got really hot, especially during track sessions. If you move your finger over them, they should feel smooth, like the disc itself.
There's also a special device to determine the condition of CCB components, it's called Carboteq, the manufacturer is proceq. Insanely expensive tool, but all high end car dealerships use these devices to determine the wear condition of CCB.

As Noggie stated, the rotors will last a lifetime, the pads will have to be replaced at least once, easy job. I'm getting ready to swap my rear pads after 150k kilometers (95k miles) for the first time.
They are fragile, but stopping power and appearance are simply outstanding

I haven't taken them off to weigh them which is the best way for sure. There is some type of sensor that can measure the density that is apparently pretty accurate. Just looking at the fibre on the rotors and at the wear indicators (BMW), there are no carbon fibres (pitting like) missing.

My buddy has a Z06 that he tracks and you can sure see where the carbon fibres are missing (almost looks like delamination).

The stopping ability of these CCBs is unreal (too grabby for me actually). Way way more aggressive braking than my f80 M3 with steel rotors. It's hard to get used to.

My biggest concern is with these brakes is chipping. Living in Canada, I took the pads out of my M3 several times just to get rid of the pebbles and to stop the squealing. I don't want this same thing to happen and end up destroying the rotors on the M5.

My rotors look like the picture above - maybe smoother.

18k on mine and other than the squealing, which seems to happen one day and not the next, I love them. I had a dream a few days ago that I had my rear tires changed and both rotors got destroyed in the process

Great idea. Where did you get the pins?

CCB F10 and F90 Experience

I have CCB on my 2019 M5 Competition. They are fantastic on the track, especially on the track i frequent the most which is hell on brakes with a lot of short straights and hard braking. I got CCB on my last F10 after having awful squealing with steel brakes that they dealer couldn't fix. The CCB squeal loudly when very wet (after washing) when in reverse, and a bit going forward but it clears up quickly as they dry.
I had to replace the rear pads on the F10 after 32,000 km. Yesterday i got an alarm on my F90 that brake pads need replacing, but i only have 20,000 km right now. I did have this alarm last year which proved to be false, so the dealer is going to check pad wear. What have others experienced. I track the car about three times a year, but they are lightly used on the street.
Thanks
